Considering a '09

I've been wanting an LNF for awhile. I found one 90 miles away that I like. It's a red 2009, 80k miles, black interior, appears all stock. The only things it does not have factory is the high-rise wing ( not a deal breaker, can always add on later ), and does not have the RPD gauge display ( also not a breaker as I over-read some problematic issues ). They want $9,450 for it. The miles seem just a bit high for my preference for getting a daily driver, but 80k isn't too high. I bought my Cavalier with 74k on it a few years ago.

Nada Guide reports $11,050 clean retail, $8,425 for clean trade. KBB reports in 'Very Good Condition' $9,530. Everything sounds spot on. As for trade, I have a black 2003 Cavalier LS Sport 5spd with 107k and i'm not sure if I would trade it or not. The book value is less than $3,900 and I would like to keep it for salt season and keep the SS clean. If not I might keep it and try to sell it for $3,500 and get low-balled to $3k.

As for deal breaker, I haven't seen the car in person yet so I don't know if it has the G85 or not. That will be my main deal breaker here.

The ad says it has 2 new tires, so I intend to have the alignment checked if I go look at it and want to buy it ( learned the hard way with my last car new tires means tire wear ).

Things I am concerned of are the porous block issue. With 80k miles it would have already been victim by now right? I studied the "High Mileage SS/TCs holding up thread" and it all comes down to preventive maintenance which is always hit or miss with used cars. So i'm not 100% on some bad issues to watch out for aside of the porous block. Some sticking rear caliper pistons and that seems about it.

As far as future mods, I wouldn't want to highly modify it. Maybe GM stage 1 kit, exhaust work ( catless DP, ZZP catback ). & an intake for sound mostly. Window tint, possibly darker tails and the evo style painted lip. I'm not one to fully build a car especially with as good as these cars are stock. That is the main reason I feel i'm done with my Cavalier. Throwing money into a phased out low value car to make it fast.

What do you folks think? Here is the link.

I'd hold out for a newer 2010 instead if I were you. The cost difference will be marginal

Reasons being? More bulletproof overall? All I know of 2010s is porous was not an issue at all, and the radios and HVAC panels are black ( less desirable to me ).

What is going on here?

G85 is standard in that year, nothing to find out.

That's a sweet deal, that is what I would require for my Florida raised SS

One thing I will say is that the suspension requires a full rebuild around 100k miles; CAB's, sway bar links/bushings, shocks/struts, tie rod ends

I love my 09. Has everything except the rpd. I paid 12,000 for mine with 68000 miles. so I'd go for it

G85 standard? Must have missed that. Thanks.

That is what concerns me the deal seems very good. What could be hidden? Perhaps its just priced low from the economy status, with cheaper gas I assume larger engine car sales are now higher.

As far as suspension rebuild, that seems fine. I would probably put Eibach pro-kit springs and Koni struts in it, so I would be willing to update it and run it for a good long time. I put an Eibach rear sway bar in my Cavalier. Made it worlds better in handling. I know these cars are more solid stock but I would probably still upgrade such stuff.

-No question whether or not the engine will take a dump on you due to porosity. The idea of dropping 5k for a new engine on a 10k car does not bode well with me
-G85 standard, RPD standard, Sunroof standard
-Newest cobalt available. You may be able to find one with factory warranty still.

I don't know what the market is like in your neck of the woods but over here you can get a 2010 TC with less miles for less greenbacks (if you factor in the godawful conversion rate, the difference is even more substantial).

Observe: http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/c...ationFlag=true

It works out to be a tad under 8000 usd, with 61k miles. This car has been siting around for a while too, I can probably get it for 7500 usd.

If you're not hurting for a car then I'd wait it out. You cant win when rushing on a used car.

Good info, I appreciate it. Around here it is quite hard to find one of these cars for a good price such as that. I would imagine further south in the states I could find a good deal but I would need assurance it was such a clean gem. I want either red or black also. More partial to red.

With winter here I imagine the car may sit until late spring until some high school graduate gets it for a gift or someone buys it while folks are still looking for AWDs or trucks.

I definitely don't 'have' to buy it now, my Cavalier is ticking just fine on my daily commutes. But this is the best local deal with partially low mileage that I have found near by. As I said RPD and high rise aren't deal breakers, however it would perfect the car. I'm keeping my search going. I've found low 30k mileage cars for $14k, and some 120k mile cars for $8k, so that's why this one seems like a good deal.

And that's just that, look at this one.
Cars for Sale: 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe in Carol Stream, IL 60188: Coupe Details - 388466861 - AutoTrader.com

The dealership that has it has some nice Corvettes and a couple Mercedes so I get the impression they don't take in garbage. We'll see though. If I do go for it I will attempt working on them with price.

I have seen this has been for sale for the last few months. 2009 Cobalt SS TURBO!. Does this belong to anyone on here?

I thought the problem was with the 09s with a late 08 build date. Also, wouldn't he be fine at higher mileage, since it would of happened already if it wS going to happen.

Porosity can strike at any time. Though statistically speaking (take this with a grain of salt, the sample size is extremely low), most have failed earlier rather than later in life.

It's always in the back of my mind driving mine. About month after I bought my 09, a 2010 went up for sale in my area.

I have a 10' got it with 53k miles 2 years ago its got 86k now. Replaced a few things. Front Breaks, MAF sensor and bpv. I've done normal stuff so far as far bolt ons and a trifecta 21psi. I'm still on the stock clutch and rear breaks as far as I know lol my car has been good to me. 30+ passes at the drags ran a 13.7 in 100°F+ weather last summer with trifecta 2.189 60' lol that was befor the zzp ic too but also racing any thing on the streets and it always hung in there. But anyways it hasn't let me down so I would hold out for a 10! Here soon im Gonna get on the maintenance it deserves lol

Sounds good. Trifecta sounds to be a popular reputable choice for these cars. One guy I know said they are troublesome tunes for these cars and I was surprised to hear that. Good to hear for feedback, thanks!

I've seen posts on a Porous Block thread stating a few 2009s had it, but it was for the most part resolved in the end of '09 and on the '10s. To be honest because of that issue that makes me feel more comfortable buying a higher mileage LNF.

I want this car bad, but I don't need to buy it. Patience in effect. We'll see what happens. I'll get the Vin # tomorrow when I call and set up a time to take a look at it. If everything checks out we'll see what happens! I really want to keep my LS Sport Cavy for a winter ride if possible.

Be carful when u want it bad, get it inspected, look for pending codes, get compression and leak down tests done. I wanted a car bad as well once, cost me a lot to fix the issues

Be wary of that car in the op looks like it was modified and then returned to stock.
Plastic hotside pipe is new intake tube and vent tube are new so it was probably bolted and tuned like most other tc's.
It doesnt have to be a deal breaker i would just do a more thorough inspection and make them take some $$$ off since it was proly modded

The other ones are way too expensive. Cobalts dont have a good reputation these days prices have dropped pretty good around here

I got the dealer to email me a car fax copy today and low & be hold it does have an accident reported but it does not state specifics about the accident. I'll be needing more into on this most certainly.

Good eye. I never would have noticed. I just notice how clean it is.

I definitely don't want to just dive into it, I definitely want to have it thoroughly searched. Thanks for the advice! How much does a compression test cost? Should I just find the nearest GM dealer up in the area it is and have them check it out to their standards and just check the body and bolt-on areas myself?

And only those two pieces in the engine bay were cleaned?

Look at the stainless hose coming out of the intake pipe looks bright and shiny new along with the fitting that commonly breaks
