Do I need an headers?

Hi everyone,

I need an advice, I own a Cobalt SS/TC 08 with a GM Stage 1, I want to change my exhaust to have a good sound (not so loud because the cops are a little picky here!) and I want also to have a gain of power with that. I already have a K&N SRI. I check on Modern Performance and I found a pretty nice kit ( Exhaust Systems - MPx 3inch Downpipe & Catback Exhaust Package 08-10 Cobalt SS ), but my friend said that a Catback exhaust didn't give u any more power until you don't change for a headers. So, do I really need to get a headers for more power, does it give me some check engine problem with the catalytic system? Where can I find good quality of headers on internet?

Thanks a lot guys.

Your friend is a ricer. SS/TCs don't have headers. They have a twin scroll exhaust manifold and the only reason to change it would be to accomodate a non-twinscroll designed turbo setup.

Instead of a header, I think the term you want is "down pipe" this is where the cat is and one of the points of exhaust restriction. Several companies make them, there's a down pipe thread if you do a search. Swapping this out will change the sound of your care and change the performance. To really take advantage of the performance change, you'd want to get your car "tuned". Again, check the forums for information on tuning. Trifecta and HP tuners are good search terms.

Ok thank you for your fast reply, I want to keep my GM Stage 1 to keep my warranty clean. I think that I'll buy this catback from Modern Performance.

Since the guy is from Quebec there is a good chance he is not talking in his native tongue and is doing a lot better than any of you would talking in French. Give him a break.

I don't know why everyone thinks this is so hilarious, there are plenty of cars that have headers that are often changed for a new exhaust...

i would think every cobalt minus the SS/TC would have a header... seeing how theirs doesnt connect to a turbo or anything..
