driving WITHOUT OIL FILTER???
driving WITHOUT OIL FILTER???
Hi, I have a 2010SSTC and I took it into the dealership to have a check engine light turned off (some cam sensor issue, don't believe it is the oil leak though). Soon after dropping my car off, I receive a call from the dealership asking me about my last oil change because whoever did it forgot to put an oil filter in my car....
I had the oil changed at NTB (yes) with Mobil 1 full synthetic. I drove maybe 3-5 hundred miles since the oil change. I was pretty angry when I found out, but I've been told that it shouldn't really be a problem. Are there any problems I should look for now? Any problems to look for in the future? Does the turbo use the engine's oil? Basically, please tell me my car isn't totally screwed. While the dealership seems nice and did not make this mistake, I would like a second opinion. Thanks guys.
Well thanks? This isn't really the kind of input I was expecting. How exactly am I dumb to ask about possible damage to my motor from no oil filter? Am I dumb because I don't have the necessary resources to change my own oil? I appreciate the attitude; but really, is it that dumb to ask? And for those people who want to assume I misnderstood and/or mistyped... the dealer said the car had no oil filter on it. I just wanted to see if anyone thought my car may be damaged.
Thanks so much for telling me I'm an idiot

Thanks dayta! And people telling me that I don't know what I am talking about: I was told there was NO filter in the car. I'm going to the dealership to pick it up now and I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure I didn't conflate things in my head.
he wont actually know until he gets there and talks to the guy who did the car

...thats the worst when i hear that, they think they know everyhting...
and im actually surprised you didnt get a check engine light for a loss of oil pressure. are you sure one of the codes your car pulled wasnt for and oil pressure loss code? im pretry sure its p0520, but not 100% on that, way to many to remember
I am sorry you were saddened that i called you dumb. Your response was because you dont have the equipment to do it, however you still dont even understand the concept of what you are even asking. Tools or not, you are still confused.
Also, we did answer your question, you just havent understood what it was. So while you want to complain about how big of a-holes we are, you might also want to read what is written to get a better understanding of your car. I plainly explained that you do have an oil filter and that it is just old (before the post got deleted). If you dont have an oil filter at all, you need to stop driving immediately as engine damage would be immanent.

^see was that so hard? I answered the dumb question
hahaha harp all you want guys, I don't care about your mechanical pedantry. For all of you who offered your gracious ass-umptions, I just returned from the dealership and there was, in fact, no filter in the housing.

hahah right, guy.
To which i suggest you immediatelty ream their ass about and demand something in writing from them. If you dont have engine damage that shows right now its quite possible you can have issues very soon as you just ran an engine with low oil pressure for 600+ miles.
Ok, well you can be upset all you want. I tried to suggest you not driving on a car if it was in fact missing an oil filter.
You respond with the spam smiley like what i said had no merit. When in fact even after your response i am giving you great feedback such as getting this in writing from the dealer. I cannot force you to heed my advice, but i will try and help you salvage a car.
I will admit my first post was laden with sarcasm and jokes but a question like this isnt asked every day and i was going to have fun with it.
And yet those people actually provide input, what have you added? Everyone one is quick to cast stones, and yet don't realize they haven't made a situation any better.

Back when I worked full time as a mechanic, we replaced numerous engines on different occasions due to mistakes made by oil change "stores". Mostly Jiffy-lube.... problems ranged from forgetting to put an oil filter on (not a cartridge one like ours, a canister style... when you forget those you have BIG problems lol), forgetting to put the drain plug back in, forgetting to tighten the drain plug... and best of all, forgetting to put OIL in the car. The one without oil didnt make it to far before the engine got very upset!
Heres what happened. They went to get the oil filter off the shelf . Turns out they are out of stock . Guy knows he threw old filter away or it's trashed . Thinks well this dude will come back here for his next oil change . By then we will have the filter then we can put one in.
This is how it happened I was there.
