i have the pal installed in my balt and it has worked perfect for me and it is very cheap considering the aftermarket units. it takes some time getting used to the controls and it does have a slight delay if you scroll to fast but it has been very good. yes it goes in back of the radio.
I put a PAL in my 08... Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:
The PAL needs to be installed by a dealer....you can install is yourself but you will still need to have the dealer integrate it with a tech 2.... so you might as well have them do the install
The PAL has a signficant lag time when it comes to using the steering wheel controls.... It works with the ipod just fine but there is a lot of press and hold when it comes to using the steering wheel controls...
The pal consists of a cable, box, and harness....I posted an earlier thread on my install so you can reference that if you wish...
I just recently changed out my head unit to a F90-BT....the install was hellish but the results are much better than the stock head unit with the PAL...

The PAL install isnt bad. I did my whole install, you'll have to take all your dash trim off, un-bolt the radio and snap in the harness that comes with it. You'll also have to cut a wire from your factory xm radio connection and splice into it. Oh yeah and you'll have to drill a hole through the back of your glove box to run the iPod able through... I think it took me about 3-4 hours to do the install from start to finish. But as stated they will have to "unlock" your XM radio with the Tech2 at the dealership. They charged me $20 to unlock it with the tech2, I think it took them 20 minutes total. Also, FYI: if you plan on using a new'er iPod such as the iPod Touch 2nd Gen or an iPhone you'll need an adapter so it'll charge correctly since the new iPods take a usb-charge method and the older models take a firewire method to charge which is what the PAL uses.
install is very easy, may take time, but basically plug and play with one wire to splice, and you dont need a tech 2 unless you want your XM back, if not, then youll just have AM, FM and XM1 which controls ipod. like the above poster said, the newer ipods need an adapter to charge. i installed it last weekend on my 08
