Oh you obviously never been to Alberta and travelled down HWY 2 lol it might as well be the autobahn the cops are too fat and lazy to do there jobs and everything but tractor trailer units avg 140 kmh its nuts everything from old grannys to soccer moms with 7 kids in a minivan oh and the best part? they all travel with about half a car length between them its amazing there isnt 6 car pileups on a daily basis out there!

I dont know how to break this to you but there is no way this car set that lap record on nurburgring without having handling, braking and a decent top end speed, this car is classed as a performance car and there is tons of gm documentation that claim 160+mph top speeds for the turbo ss, there is no liability for a car having or not having a speed governor on it the liability is on the end user to follow the rules of the road and follow the speed limits lol oh and speed limitations have always been one of the easiest things to override I personally witnessed a factory trained chrysler technician remove the limit on an old eagle talon/ mitsubishi eclipse turbo chrysler sets it to 210kmh and with out anything crazy thru the dealer diagnostic equipment he raised it to unlimited in about 10 seconds and my uncle has a cavalier z24 that has been factory un-governed cause he refused to buy it with a governor lol it only does 120 mph though....

LOL I don't go to Wikipedia for performance related data.

I got my Top Speed numbers from Car and Driver, which uses the "average-of-two-way runs" method that I mentioned which eliminates any variables due to wind.

I know just making a point.. top end is proven by the car not a magazine or website.. And no the cobalt ss does not have a speed limiter as far as I know.

According to the HP Tuners read of a GM st1 I have, the limiter is still 155 mph.

Funny that wikipedia mentioned 158mph for the ss/sc, thats what the LSJ top speed limiter is set to by GM.

Well I wonder if the gms1 gets rid of it but then it would seem redundant to have one In the first place since makin a car faster doesn't make it safer for liability purposes.

^AGREED

It's not that I don't believe people when they say their car ran "this" or "that", it's just there's too many variables.

The better automotive journals adjust for air density, wind, etc.

No private individuals that I know of do that.

dont the gears run out by like 160-170 anyway??

I mean doing 80 is like 3k rpms in 5th, I dont think 4th is tall enough to do 150, and your clutch hates you if you were doing anything close to those speeds flooring it in 5th.

ok, drag limited means that the power the engine is outputting is not enough to outweigh the physical drag the car produces due to its shape, aerodynamics and intake and cooling requirements. The Cobalt producing stock numbers may be limited at 155mph (highrise, and yes I have been there too), but theoretically more horsepower will yield a high top speed. I do not have the physics intellect to calculate the power to drag ratio and how much is required to produce a considerable difference in top speed but I guarantee that this little econobox can hit much higher than 160 mph with an appropriate tune (even GM stage 1). I don't doubt the OP at all. However he did take a considerable risk with Blizzaks on... I do recognize that factor and would NEVER try that (I actually do have Bridgestone Blizzaks as well, recently switched back to summers).

unless you're making some serious power up top (which the stock turbo can not accomplish) your clutch will hold fine over 4000rpm in 5th gear even with a super aggressive tune.

It seems like there are lot of moms in here lol I was at no risk of crashing or hurting myself or anyone else where I was driving at and I will state again there is no chance those tires would fall apart driving them to 160mph for 30-40 seconds the speed rating on tires is for continous use 20mins+ at top speed there is no way anyone could do that on any public roads, I was hoping that everyone would post what there personal best top speed was so that we could compare results not turn this into a theoretical what if, just take your damn cars out and run em and post what the top speed was!!!

I got 38mpg on my last tank of fuel but I'm in imperial gallons. I got 580km on the trip meter and it only took 45 liters to fill up . And that's mostly highway with a bit of city as well.

top speed over 160mph .. it's been done... ]

I'm not sure what Blizzaks you're running, but the LM-22 is the highest rated one I've seen and even it isn't supposed to go above 149.

Ok lets forget about the fact I had blizzaks on the car and lets focus on the top speed that everyone has been able to acheive in their cobalt!! I seen 258kmh or 160mph what have any of you guys been able to get?

Nice run!! Im gonna video the rpd next time I take the car out for a top speed run then you can all see that it really doesnt take a long slow drag out in 5th it just pulls right up to 160 hopefully with the summer tires back on it will be more stable and I will be able to see where it stops pulling at!!

I hit the top MPH when the car was stock once, the dotted lines were solid and I said "ok this is more than fast enough for me". I'm not even attempting it with the GMS1 since we have slightly more HP/TQ output...even 20 mor km/h would be excessive.

I've only ever had my car up to about 210 km/h (130 mph) on stock tune, and I don't plan on going there again on a public road.
