help me choose lol

the day before i order a new turbo i'm having second thoughts on which one to get.

i planned on going hahn for obvious reasons- save the tranny is the main reason and it puts me roughly where i want to be 390-400 range.

then thought about zfr- easier install, good power, etc..but, TRANS KILLER LOL. my only hope would be to get vince do a custom tune for it and cross my fingers. i rarely drive my car hard, but when i do i expect it to perform without fail.

so i guess i will go with the s20...unless someone can convince me otherwise?? i have trifecta and planned on keeping trifecta if it matters.

Why does everyone say the ZFR is a trans-killer? You can adjust the tune to bring torque in more slowly.

I like the clean install of the ZFR but hahn kit will be easier on the trans if you're only looking for high 300s sounds like it could be right for you

well i guess i could get vince to that?? i just hate shelling out 2 grand and have to "turn down" the power, when i could save about $500 and get full potential and same results. wow sslobalt, i guess i just answered my own question lol...the install would be soo much better and having the zfr for the "cool" factor lol, would be almost worth the $500.

i was thinking the same thing. if my stock tranny can hold up for a year or so, i should have enough for a 6 speed.

I'm waiting for the 7163efr I'm hopinh it will act like the 256et because it's a bit bigger than th 6758 will have less low end and hopefully that will help plus it flows 60lbs/min

I personally mainly blew my trans with my efr because I got too power hungry and started pushing 28psi with basically no boost ramp on e47 and sticky tires. I ultimately comprimised with the power numbers I have in my sig.

Long and short of it, tuned more conservatively you can easily minimize stress on the trans with a zfr. I just went a little overboard on my own car. I'm sure many others that blew theirs were ultimately in a similar mindset as me....moar powah! lol

you would show up to make me feel better lol. just emailed vince to see if he can tame the torque i guess. i will be on 93 pump so not sure if my levels will be over 410 lol. that is reassuring. so i'm guessing you got another tranny and it's holding up well?

Both turbos you mentioned will meet the power goals listed. If you get a zfr just have a nice boost ramp, even then it can still blow the trans. Hahn is doing a Group buy on the s20g soon. I guess it really depends on how much you want to spend.

don't know how much this helps as I don't know much about the zfr but I have the s20g and was tuned by trifecta for it. love the power it makes definitely can't go wrong with it..

well i made the choice to get the hahn. he asked if i wanted to wait for the group by, i declined as i need my car back up and running. hopefully will b installing next week. looks like more people are leaning with this turbo too. he sounded confident he would have ten people by next week. he already had 5-6 people.

The 20g is a solid turbo. Yes it's old tech and journal bearing BUT, it is still tried and true tech that works well. You won't have quite as quick of a spool as a 6758, and they do also have a bad tendency to surge down low but they are still solid.

Ull still be making good power with zfr. Hahn will kill ur trans to after awhile. Just save up till Black Friday for a trans and then u can open it up.

Just curious as to what makes you think a 20g will be a trans killer. It's of course still possible, just far less likely than a zfr.

still makes a lot of torque, comes on slower but will still stress the stock trans. wont kill it as fast but will eventually if u don't watch out. honestly wish our engines didn't make so much torque. I guess that's why civic tannys can take the amount of power they put into some of those cars. lots of hp, no torque. lol

You do realize a turbo that spools quick with a ton of torque is gonna be more harmful compared to a turbo spooling later and having the toque come in gradually? Its a lot easier on the trans. Then again your trans can break whenever really.

Exactly.

Tom, anything is possible when you start making some power of course, but torque in particular is what really kills our trans.... any trans for that matter not set up to handle that sort of torque. That is why clutches and trans are usually rated by torque and not so much by hp.
The zfr spools far harder and far faster than a 20g ever will. Plus I've not once seen or heard of someone blowing a trans with a 20g. Compare that to how many stories have you heard of zfr strapped balts blowing trannies?
