Canada Limited slip differential

Hi guys, glad to be now part of the CobaltSS.net community. This is my first post !

I'd like to know ... I plan on buying a leftover SS later in August.

Since I doubt that these leftovers will have the LSD option already installed, I am wondering if this is something that a dealer can install, and if so, at what price ?

There are a few brand new 2008 SS-TC around, nicely equipped, but without the LSD, going for about 18-20k (CAD of course ...) whereas the dealer still asks 27-28K for a new one, without LSD also.

Another quick question to felllow Canucks ... Do you think the LNF turbo upgrade will be legal -and sold- here ?

Get one with the LSD is possible it will be a lot better in the snow. LSD will cost a small fortune to have the dealer install. Approx $2500 installed. I guess that is 3000 canadian or so.

Don't even bother getting it without a LSD. I only really say that because you live in Canada...you will HATE yourself when it snows if you don't get it.

Well I am not sure if you know about the promo for the 2009s. $4000 off sticker rebate from chevy which would put you around $24,000 then the dealer could tighten that price up a bit more. I could have walked away with a 2009 for $23,000 but found a NEW 2008 for $20,250. Deals in August may be better but may be less to choose from. Good Luck.

I can't emphasize how important the LSD will be for you if you drive in Montréal winters. I couldn't imagine driving in the snow without it on my car.

The torque-biasing Quaife actually needs some traction on both wheels in order to work. So If you're spinning on snow it's hardly better than an open diff. I also doubt you'll need to power out of snow covered curves either.

Buy it if you plan to track your car or if you want to accelerate out of turns on windy roads.

Just to get it straight... I won't get the SS without LSD. If I can't have the LSD, I'll buy something else.

I went to the dealership Friday. The guy was selling at MSRP and wouldn't bulge. You either get $4K off or 0% financing right now, but the promos end in June.

He also mentioned that if I wanted to get one with LSD the only way was to order the car. We looked at the national inventory and they were NONE with the differential.

I ordered mine, I preferred it that way. You're guaranteed that no one a) beat the **** out of it on a test drive or b) beat the **** out of it between dealerships in a dealer transfer.

OK back to topic ... I read somewhere that the LSD was a dealer-installed option, reading your posts this is no-no.

OK, how about the LNF turbo upgrade kit ? Available in Canada or not ?

I had both, LSD and Non-LSD SS/TC's - owned 2 different ones. Long story shorty - lady totaled my car parked.

The LSD TC feels so much more responsive in turns and in traction performance. When I used LC in the non-LSD car, tires would just keep spinning, more noise than performance. With the LSD car it literally felt like it pulls faster and doesn't burn as much rubber unless if I mash it.

Hope that helps!

The limited slip differential is definitely something I'd get. I would consider it a "mandatory option!" That goes for rear-wheel drive vehicles as well. For all-wheel drive, I haven't found many cars that sported limited slip differentials in the front AND rear axles besides a few SUVs, Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, and the Lamborghini Murcielago. Even Audi uses open differentials and relies on electronic traction control or the Haldex system.

Hmmm... odd.

My dealer here said that they themselves didn't/wouldn't order any SS TCs w/o the LSD for their lot and that not many would cross the border without it anyways.

Are you looking to get a coupe; maybe you'll find some sedans with LSD.

Please guys, not to be rude or anything, this is not a post about getting or not the LSD. Just wanted to see if you knew anything about getting the LSD installed at the dealership on a non-LSD SS, since this is probably what will be left over in August.

Or, is there an aftermarket possibility ?

It will be quite expensive to install after the fact. I estimate $500-$1000 for the total effort. It's best to find it on a vehicle. Almost all of the SS/TC's in the lots here have the LSD.

If you don't have the LSD in your car, its not really worth the price unless you're going to be road racing or you're really into auto-x

Dealers won't touch these transmissions. You will have to seek out a shop to put one in for you.

LSD and Stage kit

LSD is a must, helps in the winter alot. I am in Alberta and last winter was brutal. Never got stuck once. I paid 23,000 CAN for my car in Nov 2008. LSD is a $600 option, a quaife after market will cost $2500 installed. The stage kit will come to Canada, when it is released. my 2 cents.
