Muffler Delete = Teh Sex

Well I picked up my SS/TC and no more than a week and 500 miles later I removed the muffler. I wanted to do it on my old cobalt, but the damn thing was totaled before I could do that.

I must say, with the muffler delete, the car sounds GREAT! It has a nice throaty sound and sounds good as well at WOT. The shop charged me $90, but it was the cheapest and most reputable shop in my area. For a cheap mod that sounds great until you get a full exhaust, I'd recommend it to ANYONE!

Cheers.

Haha, yeah sorry man. I just got it done tonight. Took all of 40 minutes to complete. I waited there in the lobby while they did it.

It's suggested as many have said. While the car was on the lift I looks at the downpipe to see how the install was going to look once I purchase one. Doesn't look all that bad honestly.

down pipe isnt too bad except for the bolt that on top of the flange that conects to the muffler. with an extension its not too bad. still a pain tho lol

I know this has been answered before prolly, but does a muffler delete void warranty?

I don't claim to be a car tech guru, but I wanna say that the muffler is purely for emissions. I don't think the actual muffler does much, I could be newbishly wrong however.

As far as I knew, Muffler is just for the environment.

Someone clarify. I would like to know as well, and also to refer to my earlier post. Does a muffler delete void warranty. B/C I am keeping my warranty.

I honestly dont understand exhaust all that much. All I know is that you want the exhaust to come out fast. If you use too big piping (3") and dont have enough HP the air will come out too slow causing backpressure in itself. Emissions has nothing to do with muffler or resonator but strickly cats. Mufflers and resonators should be strictly sound oriented. Some mufflers are functional and seperate the fast moving air from the slow moving air and funnel the slow air around the outside of it spinning it and blending it with the fast moving air moving through the center.

Cars are made with cats and resonators and mufflers and warrentied that they will run good for a long time. I imagine removing these parts and opening up restrictions will give you more HP but will casue more wear and tear on your engine in the long run.

Yes, it does reduce backpressure. That is good for the car, not bad.

Muffler is for noise regulations, nothing to do with the environment.

Muffler delete will not void your warrenty. nothing will just straight out void your complete warrenty all together that I know of. If you tuen it i imagine you still have a suspension warrenty. Get what im saying?

Anyways your muffler delete should not cause any problems at all except **** off your neighbors and I dont believe GM techs will give a **** if you have a fart can or no muffler at all when you go in for a new belt or squeaks or something.

so if i wanted to do it myself, i would cut out the muffler, replace with some couplers and same size piping, and done correct? throw some welding in there too obviously...?

Exactly. I don't have any welding techniques or skill so hence why I paid for mine!

You can do whatever you'd like to be honest. I didn't have a power saw that could cut through metal. I figured I might as well have the shop do it all so if something gets jacked up somehow, I can go back to them with my rants .

If I had a power saw, had a lift and knew how to weld, I'd do this myself. This isn't the case however, so I gotta pay to play!

i am thinking you could do it fairly easily with a jack and a sawzaw. and you could prob use some coupling to put it all back together, but i'd prob weld it because it'd be a lot safer. i can't weld, but my buddy and his dad can. so i think that's what i'll do. same as a shop would do right? anyone?

No, Cars do not need back pressure. That is an old myth that is actually true on carburated cars and trucks. Too little backpressure causes lean A/F mixture and burnt valves because of the increased flow and no way for the car to compensate by adding more fuel. Less backpressure is much better, An engine is an air pump the more air in and out the more HP. Less backpressure means faster turbo spoolup and The stock muffler is strait through BTW It flow better than the s bent part of the exhaust system. It is purely a sound mod. No hp gain from a muffler delete on these cars.

I completely agree with Terminator2.

You can do the muffler delete yourself but unless you bend the pipe it will come out of the bumper crooked. I got mine done for $100 as well. It was well worth it for me. The place cut the muffler off, expanded the ends, bent the pipe, welded all of it and welded 2 hangers back on the pipe to hold it up.

No CEL. And why would you want to just cut the muffler and not extend the tip? If you're going to do something, please don't do it half-assed. You can cut the muffler yourself and then take it to a shop in which they'll charge you $50 bucks to weld on a straight pipe with your stock tip welded onto it. That's the best way to go IMO.
