onstar
well yeah im sure its hard wired through out the car but if you get rid of the stock stereo and dont get the $100+ harness and get the $50 one like i did, onstar becomes useless.
But seriously, unless you get in a high speed chase (fucked anyway) It has great safety features.

There are plenty of safety measures in place to make sure OnStar is not abused...surely there are legal rights to its use that protect the driver...the last thing GM would want is a bunch of lawsuits from OnStar abuse...
They can only do that if the owner on the account calls OnStar...then they contact the police and will only do that after they have located the vehicle...

well, my year of free onstar is up in June, and i pressed the button and had them cancel it, that way i don't get charged 20 a month for it. after you cancel it, they tell you that you no longer get the safety crap, like calling when when an airbag deploys or other such junk. just press the button and have them cancel it. you'll never hear about it again.
its BS they can't "spy" on you.....
There is a million onstar accounts....random spying????
They hide the box in all different places, on the same model of vehicle.
so it cant just be found.........Changing the head unit will only disable you from using it...all functions still capable like theft vehicle locate and police slow down operations.....gota find the box.
but that seems silly to me..

Just sell your car and get a older car.

I'd bet that the safety features still work even if you cancel your subscription.
Even if you cancel OnStar you can still use it for an Emergency, just like if your cell phone service was shut off, you can still dial 911.
Homeland security, NSA, CIA, FBI, etc can spy on you when and how they want. Its 1 in a million chance that you will ever get spied on by them unless they have probable cause....i.e. if you say a key word over the phone like, bomb, president, so on and so forth.... Just because its in the movies doesn't mean its not real. Yes, The government(state and local, some federal depending on the type) need warrants to search your home, but they do not need them to tap your phone, bug your **** and all such. That all comes with probable cause.
OnStar is strictly a safety and road side assistance feature. It also acts as a Phone(prepaid)...they can tap that and use that to narrow down your location by cell tower and satellite.
Yes, the government is watching you, Like I said before, its a 1 in a million, probably billion chance that they are watching you unless you are a suspected terrorist or federal criminal.....
Keep the Onstar, cancel your service......Don't remove it because it could come in handy one day......they are there for you
Also Onstar is tied into may things on your car, be careful if you do attempt to remove it, you could screw your warranty and possibly mess other things up on your car.....Your car is practically one big network...

I've heard in other threads on here that shutting down onstar or even cancelling you subscription makes it so you can't use your bluetooth. I doubt it's true but have heard it a few times. Any one have reliable info?
ive read on some forums that disconnecting the antenna doesnt "fully" disconnect you.
something about disconnection the box (vcim)
if someone knows where the box is/how to get to it
and what to do to disconnect it
that would be awesome.
cause i just hate the fact that someone could be watching you.
thanks

Even so... Our cars (as do all late-model GMs) have what is called an Event Data Recorder (EDR). Certain non-descript operating conditions trigger the EDR. Data, such as speed, tach, TPS, brake pressure, steering angle, accelerometer inputs, etc. can be downloaded for later analysis. So even if you neuter the car's wireless connectivity -- it's still keeping notes.
you are being paranoid.
I could find out where the onstar module is, and tell you. But I won't for the sake of (cobalt)vehicle security, onstar is a reactive theft device.
couple other things: unpluging the wiring(not antenna) from the module will definately stop the bluetooth from working, and will likely stop your car from starting.

I think the bluetooth won't work if you disconnect power to the onstar module because part of the bluetooth system is integrated into the onstar box. That being said, I'm pretty sure it's separate from the subscription stuff. If you cancel your onstar, the bluetooth half should keep working. It'd be like you're trying to make a call using the onstar minutes and.. oops... no minutes, let's connect you with onstar to buy more minutes... the point is that it would have to still work to be able to do that even.
