Probably selling the 08 balt
So I was given a proposition by my mother recently. If I sell the 08 Cobalt SS turbo and get her a cheap car like a pontiac g6 or something, she will give me my dad's 2001 E39 BMW M5. I know I shouldn't be on the fence about it but I love my cobalt. I did the interior in suede and it's great on gas are my 2 main arguements against doing it. Besides it hasn't even been broken in yet, got only 3800 kms... thats under 2800 miles... So I haven't unlocked its full potential.
But then again... This is the pinacle sedan. That 400 hp V8 with an intoxicating rumble of the engine and exhaust. 0-60 takes a mere 4.8 seconds (of course my late father never drove it like that so it will take a while to learn my driving habits, or I just incorporate his style which is more likely) for a sedan that's insane (Yes I know the sedan balt goes very quickly too. But going in 4th gear from 80 km/h to 150 km/h and it only takes 2 seconds, so exhillarating too.
The cobalt FEELS faster because it's lighter. But look at the speedo and BMW clearly is faster. So I don't know. It should be an easy decision but I'm still hesitant. I probably will do it though as it was my dad's pride and joy. Just wanna know what you guys think.

Ya I probably will be doing. And don't worry I won't be trashing it. It's an EXPENSIVE car to fix lol found a good quote on insurance that will actually be less than my cobalt so that's a start. Pretty bad on gas though lol can't expect much for a 5.0L V8 lol. Mostly I want it just out of respect for my dad. I really don't want it being sold to someone else. Anyways now comes the issue of selling my cobalt... not the best time in the economy to be doing such a thing lol
Do it....and dont think twice about it.
My friend has an 08 M5 (with the 500 hp engine) and it is an incredible machine. Your gen m5 is great as well. A very nice v8 under the hood and you can seat 4 people VERY comfortably.
Enjoy!

I would keep the balt, It isn't a BMW ... BMW costs 2x as much to work on IMO the balt has warranty .. Easily modded, Better gas milage, BMW is a status symbol type of car so it is your choice man. I think a 4Cyl whoopin 8's is just HUMILIATION for most
good luck with what ever you do !
You should take the M5, and turn it into a Team Polizei clone

That's 4.8 sec with a professional driver... and the balt SS\TC is faster with just a tune....
Those older E39 M5's from 1997 to 2005 are the nicest the new bodystyle V10 models are ugly... Stick with the Balt.... That M5 will cost you in ins too...plus only 22-23 mpg highway.
Think of this.... Cobalt has warranty, better gas mileage, better handling, and competitive power. M5 has great looks, great ride, larger amount of respect on the road and very luxurious and has a 6 speed.
Cobalt has a decent ride, not luxurious, less room inside, 5 speed, fwd.
M5 terrible gas mileage..(i had a 530i and was on the bimmer forums everyday hearing people cry about it.) extremely expensive parts to change, WEAK cooling system, possible carbon buildup in critical parts of the engine (since you noted ure father babied it) and has no warrenty.
Pros and cons of both.
Personally i had a 2002 530i sport, and i loved everything about driving the car except for the power (225hp 214tq). But its heavy and not aerodynamic so i got like 15-17 in the city and like 26-27 on the highway. I got the cobalt because i realized i wanted a few things.... good speed, good looks, good gas mileage, and a warranty. So make a check list of things u want and then see how each car matches up.

M5 > SS/TC, period.
Let's be honest here. We don't drive Cobalts because they're the pinnacle of automotive engineering, we got them because it's the best we could afford
. That M5 is a step up.

To those of you who are defending the SS/TC, take a ride in an M5 (or better yet drive one) and then tell me which car you would rather have.
You just re-affirmed my point, the key part of your statement is "in its class." It's a fantastic car for what we paid, but it's by no means a world-beater. The M5 is one of the better cars on the road.
Yes I know the M5 is a very nice car and on the highway I managed 10.6 L/100kms (or 27 mpg) with a little bit of city but mostly highway and some drops to 4th from 80km/h, gunning it to 150km/h and back to a cruise of 120. So I think with a light foot consistently on the highway I can easily reach 30 mpg. Which can be verified as the range indicated when I filled up with 30L of fuel it was saying 286 kms. Pretty damn good for a giant V8. With a lot more city driving and flooring it with a few buddies, it only increased to 12.2 L/100kms P.S. the M5 will out-handle a cobalt anyday. It's got huge rear tires (18x9.5) so it lays the power down hard. Still easy to spin those tires though. Yes I do agree that a simple tune will allow the cobalt to accelerate a lot quicker. The BMW is a beast. No rattles, creaks, cheapness or discomfort. Everything about the M5 is luxury and speed. The big thing that I really am worried about though is that yes, it will be VERY expensive to maintain. If anything goes wrong with it then I am up a creek without a paddle... Thats why I'm hesitant. I know with the proper care this car will last virtually forever. I know of quite a few people that have old BMW's (including M5s) dating back to the 80s. Being only 8 years old now I think it should be good for a while but still might need something at any time... The VANOS has me worried the most. I know my father had the VANOS sensors replaced fairly recently but they are costly. And if I need to replace the whole VANOS... now THAT is a buck and a half lol
I do love my cobalt though. Still in that break in period so I'm not seeing the best fuel economy yet. 9.9L/100kms with both city and highway driving... Thought I would be getting better than that but I will chalk it to break in lol. I love the sound of that turbo too. Although it doesnt really compare to that V8 rumble. Insurance will drop with the M5 as it's a little older (although I would have to change companies for that). Don't know for sure though. The outweighing a little extra gas for saving in insurance breaks about even. The next thing I have to worry about is maintenance. For the cobalt it is nothing. Warrantees are awesome. However if GM files for Chapter 11 then I am in the same boat as the Bimmer regardless. I'm weighing the pros and cons and I'm still undecided lol
