Problems with reverse
my car has been grinding when i put it in reverse lately. I let the cat warm up cycle finish and let the oil temp get between 80-100 degrees, just incase that has anything to do with it. Also it only happens when i first initally put it into reverse, if i put it back into first then into reverse then it wont do it. Also its always after the car has sat overnight.

Mine is intermittently stubborn to go in.
W/ the occasional grind.
Somebody here mentioned putting it in second first - no idea why it works, but it does.
Other than that, to heck w/ it - we have a 100K powertrain warranty.
As far as the cause - sluggish reverse synchros, maybe ?

When the car is parked, leave it in first. When you start the car, put it in neutral and let it warm a bit. Before shifting in reverse, always engage first before then get in reverse like some people already said. I always done that with all of my cars and never had an issue engaging reverse, same thing with my SS/TC!

It also has a lot to do with the fact that reverse is a straight gear, no synchros. My car used to grind too now i just put it in third then reverse and it works everytime.

I learned the hard way- in the cold it makes it louder and its worse especially if its sat for a while for some reason in my experiences.

Hmmm I'm with you guy, I think its just a cobalt thing cuz I took mine to the dealer cuz it was buggin the **** outta me an I thought I broke somethin, an sometimes 1st was a bitch to get into..
They said it was my fault cuz I was either "racing" or "putting the car in reverse while it was moving forward" neither of which I did and after a long ass fuss and 2.5 months at the dealership, they gave me a new transmission, either cuz 'gm authorized it's or cuz they didn't know what they were doin... im leaning towards the latter...
*o an i was at less than 2.3k miles btw*
Even after the new tranny my car still doesn't go into reverse... I jus POP it into 4th an then put it in reverse, sometimes it gets embarrassing tho... sittin there waitin for my car to listen so i can back up lol...
That's a bad look tho Chevy

I was having the same issues. Brought it in, dealership replaced the whole trans. Ran great, blew the clutch, took it in. Dealer said they wouldnt warrenty the clutch. They put it back together. Drove it home the ghetto way (matching the rpm of the engine and trans to get it into gear.) Got the new clutch ordered started pulling it apart... When the dealer took it out to check on the clutch and when they put it back together they never refilled the trans. they let me drive it home 8 miles with no fluid. Trans is ruined with only 2k miles on it -_-

when this happened to me i brought it to the dealership, they claimed it was the clutch and gave me a new one. That didnt fix it. Later found out that its because the gears dont line up. The only way to do it is to put it in any gear then reverse. Or you can just put it in reverse super slowly. Im to impatient for that so 1st to reverse it is. At least i got a new clutch out of it

In the case of the F35, I haven't had one apart, but according to GM its a fully synchronized transmission including reverse.
So in theory the transmission should not need to be shifted into another gear before engaging reverse, it should just engage smoothly regardless. As many of us know thats not always the case, so in order to ensure smooth engagement you simply select 1st gear before selecting reverse. This stops the input shaft from spinning, making it very easy for reverse to be engaged.

Being a straight cut or helical style reverse gear is irrelevent, what matters is whether or not the gear itself has a synchro assembly.
