Random Misfire

Well after getting random misfires (verified by my scan gauge) for a while now, the computer finally popped the code for it and turned on the check engine light. I took it into the dealer today. They think its the MAF, so they are going to order a new one, but were having trouble getting it since the car is so new. They didn't recommend driving it, so they gave me a rental. Base model cobalt . Boy this thing is slow and gutless lol.

A bad maf might explain why the computer has been pulling so much fuel recently - my long term trims were around -20 to -24.. That's pulling an awful lot of fuel out of the trim.

Turns out my car was also included in the recall on the rotors, so I get new rotors! Also a good thing, since after my run down hwy 221 in the mountains, they were definitely warped...

Anyone else experiencing random misfires?

If you feel a shudder or juddering at small amounts of throttle, you are probably misfiring. I didnt have a problem at higher rpm or over 20% throttle, it was under light load/light throttle that it was misfiring. It just got bad here in the last week, but Ive been feeling it for a month or two.

What octane rating and supplier are you using?

I am pretty certain I have a slight misfire from time to time.

I haven't seen ANY instances of knock at WOT.

Ive never had any knock myself - not even one. Just the random misfires.

if you are getting a slight misfire you can try changing the plug gap to .32, this might work. Or just take it in and have the dealership take care of it.

It only affects the 2008 SS/TC with Brembos, and only a few of them.

I shudder and rumble at slow speeds and little throttle.. I thought it was just from being a granny on the stick. Sounds like I am coming close to stalling the car..not a misfire ( although I really wouldn't know to be honest, not a wrench head)

Here this is pretty informative. A few posts down they give the VIN range. There's also an oil drain plug TSB.

Only once... at WOT in 2nd near.... maybe 5,500 RPM I saw the engine light flash like 4-6 times. Never happened again. No idea what that was... maybe a misfire.

If your car is misfiring, it will eventually set a check engine light - I think the code is p2xxx or something like that - I forget the exact code I read on my scanner.

I hit up onstar, who told me blah blah blah, misfire, blah blah would you like me to connect you to your service department? That was nice, but not nice enough to pay for onstar after the trial year runs out..

*inserts infinite wisdom*

I have seen a LOT of LNFs experiencing random misfires on stock tunes. Mainly in low RPMS and under part throttle.

The steps I have done to correct this issue is alter the "Intake Camshaft Base Angle Warm" table and "Exhaust Camshaft Base Angle Warm" tables.

Your dealer may not be able to do that, since there is not a known reflash to fix it from GM. Also, the spark plug gap on the LNF stock is supposed to be around 0.042, but the plugs I have been pulling were gapped all at 0.030 far difference from listed specs.

Some even have the WRONG spark plugs installed in them. Some left the factory with the wrong heat range plugs.

U didn't just hijack this thread did ya? Warped rotors you should feel the brakes pulsating when you step on them.

Here go and read about it. Google search did the trick
