Rental during warranty work?
Rental during warranty work?
I'm bringing my car in to have my brakes fixed tomorrow. If the dealership has to keep my car for a few days, are they obligated to provide me a rental? The way I see it, if GM's faulty parts cause me to lose use of my vehicle, an alternate should be provided. Is this indeed the case?
I know other people on the forum have been given rentals or loaner cars, but is this a GM policy or a dealer-to-dealer thing? I just want to know my rights regarding the subject before going in.

If they review the car and need to order parts, and the car is still drivable, they will make you come back the day the parts come in. If the car is physically not drivable, then yes most likely they will provide you with a rental.
Back in the day on my 2004 cavalier, the syncro went out (only 4,000 miles on the car) and they provided me with a rental for the 3 days it took to fix...

yes, if it is warranty work and they will have it for more then a few days they have to provide you with a rental. depending on your age they may give you a hassle to get one, because some states have different laws on ages for renting a car. i had trouble once because i was 20 and they said you have to be 21. i told them i had no other vehicle to use and needed a rental to get to work and school, so they worked something out, and got me one
I am pretty sure its a GM thing... Cause they told me that Gm would cover the price of a rental. Interesting thing is that it is a rental, from Enterprise, well at least at the dealer I went to. Which I thought was odd.
Here is the REALLY shitty thing that happened to me which wont affect most ppl here. But I was about 3 months short of being 21 when i had this problem with my balt, the service manger said I have to be 21 to get the rental, so I said **** it, and kept my broken car, or I would have been screwed. Went back when I was 21 but they ended up fixing it in about 3 hrs.
So ya, if you arnt 21 your fucked and carless while they fix your car... Kinda Chicken **** if you ask me.

Thanks for the quick responses. The car is still fully driveable, I'm just trying to get my brake problems on record ASAP so they fall under warranty. I've only got 12,000km (7,500mi) on the car, so the service manager says I'm well within my rights to demand a free fix. I'll just make sure they give me the car back.
But I am sure a lot of people are over 18 and buy a car and are working and living on their own, in which case your kinda SOL. And if your under 21 you cant even drive a rental... so still kinda screwed if your rents even pick up the car.
wow it seems to go by the state. I was 19 and got three different rentals. Two of the rentals, i got my car back in 8hrs. One time they were out of rentals. They filled out paper work to give me a third party rental until they realised i wasn't 25. The guy that sold me that car said if i was there longer than 40min he'd pull a car off the lot for me. They cut me to the front of the line and got me out fast
