rough engine sound at start up
well i brought the TC in. the dealership kept her over night and this morning they did the cold start and herd the cold start noise. they are going to pull the VC off tomorrow and go from there. they think its a timing chain, rocker maybe. they will have my car for a week or more they said. its good to know people who work at the dealership and take care of you. well see what happens
Hope it gets fixed.
i know lol i brought my car into the dealership about 2 weeks ago for the same thing. well they replaced a couple of sensors but the sound was still there. so i called them last week and told the service writer that they need to keep the car over night to hear the sound that im talking about,so i didnt sound like i was crazy lol
My 09 SS/TC did this once after I stored it for the winter for about 6 months. It was a loud and noisy grinding sound, like metal on metal. I chalked it up to lack of lubrication in the valvetrain, so what I do now is crank the engine and shut it off right before it starts up. Then I repeat this once more. I figure it wouldn't hurt to get some oil pumping through the system for a few seconds before I let the engine fire up and idle.
LOL I gave up on the dealerships, Horrors in the making. I got a bran new motor, just hit 10k on it. Have an 06 SS SC. An its been doing this ticking ever since it has hit Mile 0000001 lol. I just assumed it was a cobalt thing. I REFUSE!!!! To let any GM dealership to touch my car again. Every time I got it back something else was broke on it, and they wouldnt cover it. Scratches, broke my spring on my strut. All of a sudden broken sun roof on the next trip, and they just slapped the broken part in the front dip area.
Good luck to you man. I hope you figure it out

My car has done this for 2.5 years, if you're talking about the noise at cold startup that sounds like a serpentine belt tensioner with a bad bearing. Terminator2 and BYT both know what it is. I can't remember what they said, but it's part of the cat warmup. My buddy has Trifecta with no cat warmup and his car does not make the noise.
Of course, you guys could be talking about a different noise, altogether.

yea, must be talking about something else. my cars at the dealer right now getting it fixed. cause by a broken timing chain guide along with a bad timing chain seal. im getting everything replaced.
Ill take a vid of it. Just becoming more and more noticeable lately. High fast pitch ticking at start up. then goes away, maybe 20 seconds later repeat. Then quiet... if I rev it it will do it again, then MAYBE some grinding noise. Its going to be going to the shop this week "Hopefully". If they get me a rental. The motor is all warrantied. It only has 10k on a brand new motor.

I posted my findings and my expreirnece with this issue.
This "ratcheting" noise at cold start up (when it's really cold outside) has been answered long ago by a GM engineer (Bill if I remember correctly) and it is the cam phasers. He went on to say that it does NOT hurt the car and it's basically the phasers running dry for a few secs and once they get oil it stops. I run 0w-30 for the winter and that noise has never come back after 2 winters.

i run 0w40 in my 4 wheeler. i always forget what the numbers for oil weight mean. the 0 stand for weight right?
lol when the hell was GM going to send a bulliten out to the dealerships!! lol o well,i just got a bunch of free parts put on my car and didnt fix the problem but the noise has gone away quite a bit.

Nice, glad to hear that. I am going ahead and tearing her down one more time just for good measure and replacing all the major timing components. Chain, Actuators, actuator solenoids and all the bolts. I Dont want this to happen to me again lol
could it be the cam chain tensioner. ive read all over the place on here that people have been replacing them cause when its cold at start up it makes a noise. its more of a rachety clanking noise. ( probably the cam chain slapping around )
i could be wrong..... and it might not be your problem... but its a very loud noise though. and iam having the same thing happen when starting the car. mines an 08tc
