Scratching Windows :-(

Hey guys,

I recently noticed that my driver and passenger windows have been scratching when i roll them up and down. I know that this is caused by small rocks/dirt sitting in the weather stripping. Where I live, the wind blows sand throughout the valley and it builds up on my car while I'm working. Anyway, I am wondering what I can do about the scratches. Also, I don't think I can do anything about the weather stripping. I thinks it's just a poor design. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone....

Jake

EDIT: My car is a 2008 SS. Thanks again....

I dunno, the glass on my car (front and rear) chips/scratches really easily, rather disappointing.

Carry a can of compressed air and spray before you get into your car and roll your windows down.

Just gotta live with it. Everyone who has a newer GM vehicle has this problem. All 3 of the cars in my house (LS, SS SC, and Trailblazer LT) all have this issue. Just normal wear and tear. I clean out my stripping with leather rubber vinyl cleaner everytime i wash the car, seems to help.

i have a large scratch in my drivers windows now because of this poor design from GM........we should try and brainstorm an few ideas to try and present the best ideas at the Western Canada meet........we could get 2-3 of us working on different ideas, maybe something would work, hell, if we come up with a good enough idea we could make a little modding money off selling the idea.

IMO, GM didn't want to spend extra money on a stronger windows motor which would allow them to use a tighter seal on the window.........

IMO, again, poor window motor, a stronger motor would prevent this

it's because they have to make glass differently than in the past, it has to be crash safe ect now where as b4 the glass was much thicker and stronger.

No. Fail.

The problem is the dirt getting trapped IN the window seal and scratching the window when it goes up and down. Making a tighter seal won't do ****. It needs a looser seal if anything

I believe that the solution would be a seal that is shaped as follows:
HTML Code:
         |
         |
        /|
       / |
      / |
     / |
    / |
   / |
  / |
The current window seal is shaped as follows (Which you probably already know):

HTML Code:
                |
      ___ |
    / \ . .|
  / \. |
/ \|
I even put dirt in the illustration! Pretty cool.... Anyway, I want to find a solution, and I want an opinion on whether you all think this would possibly work. Thanks....

The seal is a piece of felt that runs along thewindow. You are referring to the trim piece...

you can some times buff scratches out of windows but they have to be real light scratches

I fail to see how that would be effective long-term. If you roll your windows down, it's going to pull it down and fold it over. If it stays like that, it will eventually take that shape permanently.

When my drivers window is all the way up I can hear wind noise coming through. Im not sure where exactly but sometimes if i 'bump' the down button ever so slightly it gets quieter... Is this something I should take it to the dealer for or should I just 'live' with it.??

I got one over the winter on the driver's side. Right in my line-of-sight with the outside rearview mirror. Ugh.

EDIT: My car is a 2008 SS. Thanks again....

Had the same problem, Get some Jewlers Rouge, the red kind. Then put it on the window and let is sit for a minute. Take a buffer, attached to an air hose and lighly buff them out. Just be carefull. Their are also some products out there that do help lighten the scratches up a bit. http://www.superiorcarcare.net/glass-polishing.html

Well, here is another one. And Jewlers Rouge is what I would recommend, thats what I used to get my scratches out of my window. But here is another link that is not on BACK ORDER that you could try. Its really all in how much you are looking to spend. Like I said, I had a friend of mine give me some Rouge from his work and I buffed it out with a really soft buffing adapter. http://www.hobbytool.com/glasspolishingkit.aspx
