Shift linkage cable snapped

Today I was driving home from school and I had to gun it a little while turning onto IL 51. I shifted to second, then as I shifted to 3rd, there was a snapping noise, my car was suddenly in neutral, and the shifter went limp.

I then proceeded to slow to a stop and check out my TWM shifter as I thought my stock plastic cable housing had broke. I had a zip tie ready just in case, as I went cheap and forgoed the $70 metal adapter. Unfortunatelyl, nothing under the shifter was broken.

Somehow, the car was now in 4th gear although it was in neutral when I heard something snap. I drove home (1.5 miles away) in 4th burning the crap out of my clutch the whole ride.

Jacked the car up, looked underneath, and it can easily be seen that the top shift linkage cable is dis-attached from the transmission now. I cannot reach the cable to rig up a temporary fix however.

My car is an 08 SS/tc and is still under warranty, but I'm concerned as I have SRI, Trifecta tune, Charge piping, and downpipe mods. I don't want to have it towed to the dealership just to find out they wont fix it.

Looks like I need a new cable and possibly a new clutch as mine smelled like a dead clutch by the time I got home

Sorry for the long story, any suggestions?

Could try the dealership, I can't really see them opening the hood for that if you tell them it's disconnected under the vehicle. They'd have a hard time linking the mods to the issue at hand, you'd be out maybe a half hour inspection ($50-60) at the worst if they won't cover it.

Edit: Oh yeah, the tow bill too.

Sorry to here about this.

When you were looking at it, was it the bracket, that was dislodged from the trans? Its possible that just the roll pin broke on this, as that has happened in the past.

If you lost one of the cables, then you should have either 1, 3, 5 or 2, 4, and maybe reverse. Try and get a better look at this to see what the problem is.

It is possible that the cable came apart near that location too, so the whole thing might have to be replaced. If you know the dealer good enough, they might not say anything about what is on the car. Most of what is there should not have caused the problem, as this in direct contact with the SRI, pipes, etc.

Good luck on this.

Dealer

Unfortunately this is my first time ever dealing with a dealer. This car is my first, and I'm limited to the Carbondale, IL as I go to college here.

I took mine in with all my mods and they didn't even say a word about them. Just replaced the plastic clip that broke

What part came off? You can reach the linkage if you take your fuse box out. I can get a hand in there if I remove the ecu.

The cable is totally disconnected from the arm that connects to the transmission. The plastic clip inside the shifter housing did NOT break. I hoped that that was the issue.

I cannot really get a good look at it, I will try pulling my fuse box to get a better look. Is there anyway I could install a new cable myself rather than dealing with the stealership?Or do you have to have special tools to tension it, etc?

I called the dealer today and found out that the shift linkage is not covered under the powertrain warranty, but under the 3 year bumper to bumper. My car's btb ran out 6 thousand miles ago so I'm SOL.

The part supposedly costs around $150, and 2 hour install at a shop so thats $400 minimum.

Instead, I'm going to try to fix it myself. I've heard of people welding the cable back on themselves but IDK if it will be strong enough.

Either the TWM sts broke the cable, or the original shifter weakened it, as the previous owner had cut it down to be much shorter.

take a picture. if the linkage just popped off of the arm on the tranny, its as simple as popping it back on. if its broken then you gotta replace the shifter linkage, but it cant be that hard to do it yourself.

oh yea and the shifter linkage should be part of your powertrain warranty, which should last 5 years 50k miles.

Ok I looked under the fuse box today. The roll pin is most likely still intact. The shift cable is not connected to the transmission though. It moves freely when I move the shifter forward and back.

I didn't have the cables snap but mine somehow stretched and I was slipping out of gears to the point where i wasn't comfortable itdriving it w/o it doing damage. You are right about dealer cost, it was right around $400 and not covered. Good luck, hopefully you can do the job and save yourself some money.
