Do you have the Dejon BPV spring? I know its been getting a bad rap lately, but, I have it, and have no problems... could solve the problem. I am also thinking maybe a bad fuel pump? My buddy had one go out at like 6k mi, and i have heard numerous stories about bad pumps.

Noooooooooooeeeeeeeessssssssss. So I was driving tonight, testing at different throttle positions to see how strong/present the noise was. And then it happened...I heard it at part throttle around 5PSI...it was fainter, but definitely the same noise. Me thinks El Turbayho is angry. I'm just gonna take it to the dealer this weekend now and at least find out what's wrong...if my turbo's shot I'm gonna throw a 50 trim on the bitch.

If it is happening at 5psi, then to the dealer you should go...that is not normal...

You are boost surging... pushing the flow of the turbo out of its flow range.

If you read the compressor map, you can point out where surging will occur. Surging for too long can actually hurt something.

thats kinda what it sounds like.. but he shouldnt be surging at 5psi or at 21 psi either.. unless there's something wrong with the bpv or gate

Yea but I shouldn't be surging at 5PSI...and several members on this board with the same tune, running the same boost are having no issues with surge. Other members with different tunes running MORE boost than I am are also having zero issues with surge. But maybe there's something wrong with my wastegate or the actuator and it's surging when it shouldn't be. IDK. I just hope it's not the entire turbo, hopefully something cheap. I'm THIS close to being out of debt (besides the car payment) and this is going to be an effing setback if I need a new turbo or something crazy.

It's scheduled to go in Saturday at 9AM, I doubt I'll hear anything on it till Monday. Getting a few other things fixed too, still have the oil leak near the intake cam sensor, my passenger side window as an epic rattle at any position on the track and I need the tires rotated. I'll post an update when I hear back from the dealer!

Yea, I've since removed the K&N drop-in and gone back to the factory air filter, this was a week or so after the problem started. So the only mod I currently have installed is the tune. My piping looks fine, still holding at the factory mounting spot for the hotpipe, never had an issue with a clamp popping off or anything.

"Did you buy that dejon upgraded spring?"

I thought about it but I'm on the fence as to whether it will actually do anything. I'd rather just wait and see what the dealer says, if it's something major I'm not going to have them fix it...I'll wait and do it myself. I've got a beater truck to drive around if I need it. But if it's an injector/fuel pump/actuator/solenoid/etc I'm just gonna have them replace it and be done with it.

If your K&N wasn't prepped properly, i.e. too oily, it could affect your MAF. Might be part of your problem. You can find how-to's on cleaning it. Might be worth a try for the cost of a bottle of alcohol before hitting the stealership.

Dropped the car off this morning around 8, they took it in right after I got out of it to start working on it...no word from them yet.

I explained what was going on with the car to the tech who was gonna work on it since the service adviser was an idiot. He said he could RTV my cam sensor and that he's seen a few HHR SS's with the same problem. He said he wasn't sure what the ticking noise would be off hand, he'd have to drive it and hear it.

At no time did anyone ask me about aftermarket parts, so I didn't say anything either.

Find my tune, cool, I'll pay for the repairs. Be a lazy tech and don't even go looking for it after you've driven the car and seen the boost goes to 22PSI...not my problem.

Back when I was a lowly PC tech at a small computer shop before I finished school we used to build custom rigs that came with a 2 year warranty. We had a strict NO overclocking policy or it would void the warranty. On more than one occasion I had kids who's parents bought them machines bring the **** in saying it was "randomly rebooting, for no reason". I wouldn't ask them about overclocking...but you can bet your ass I checked every one of them for it once we diagnosed the machine and most of them were overclocked, the wrong way, and I'd void their warranty for it. I figure it's the same boat for my car...they find the "overclock" (lol) then they can void my warranty, I'm not gonna hand it to 'em on a platter.

Well I got a call that the car was ready today because they couldn't reproduce the noise I was hearing and the seal for my leaking sensor won't be in for 3-4 days so I could take it now and bring it back once the seal gets in. They did my oil change and tire rotation for free because of the wait and said when I bring the car back if it's still making a noise that I can take the shop foreman for a drive to point it out. They did say there was a loose bolt holding down par of the intake assembly though, they tightened it down before testing the car...

SO anyway, it was all done under warranty, not a word was mentioned about my tune and I got a free oil change and tire rotation to boot. I forgot how awesome my car is after driving my roomates new Si around for the last few days...the clutch, the shifter, the handling and most obviously the power, sooo much better than the Si...feels like I just got it again!!

AND long story short, the noise is GONE. I beat on it a few times on the way back from the dealer trying to reproduce the noise and it wouldn't come back... Maybe it was that loose bolt and the whole intake assembly was rattling? I'm going to keep my ears open for the next few days until I can bring it back for the seal but for now the noise is gone and I'm happy.

Good news!! I'm glad everything is working out for ya. I was feelin a little nervous for ya. Let's just hope it was the intake that was a little bit loose!

Any updates on your car and the noise?

Your turbo is not shot?

Still think it was just the loose bolt?

Car is driving wonderfully...I love my car and driving that "Si...gh it's not turbo'd" around for a few days made me realize how much more awesome the car is, haha.

No noise so far and it pulls hard as ever. It's certainly far from the fastest thing around but it sure puts a smile on my face anytime I put the pedal down.

I'm going to keep a close eye on it to see if the noise crops back up before I take it in for the seal but so far so good.

Resurrecting this post from the dead...

An update on this, the noise came back within a day of my last post so when my cam sensor seal came in (which is leaking again) I took the shop foreman at the dealer on a test drive to point out the noise.

He tells me it's the fuel injectors, there's a new insulator out for that, it covers up the noise. Yea, I'm aware of the insulator, it's meant to reduce the noise AT IDLE...and don't you think if it was the injectors it would be making the noise ever since I bought the car and not just all of a sudden and progressively worse? He had no answer for those questions.

So they take the car in, tell me it needs the insulator and order that, I dropped the car off today for them to install it. Picked it up a few hours ago...still making the noise as bad as ever, not any quieter...the car is a little quieter at idle though, which is what the insulator is SUPPOSED TO DO.

Sigh, so whatever, I'm going to wait till whatever it is explodes and then tow it to them so they can fix it. The cars performance still seems unaffected by the noise. The dealer also seems completely oblivious to the tune so I'm not so worried about the warranty anymore either.
