Slipping Clutch rumor

So I've been told that when you make about 307 lbft torque the clutch starts slipping. Is that true? Is anyone making more than that and it's still holding?

I assume tc..casue an sc wouldn't make that much torque unless harrop or turbo swap

I havent seen a non-linear bump in the MPH/rpm graph on the dyno at anything under 350 Wtrq.

Lies.

Laughing gas throws SC cars over 300whp/wtq without issue

If it's a TC and it does slip, you gotta realize the TC clutch was the biggest one that Chevy could get in there.

And as with all modding though, once you start making more hp/trq than the car was designed for - then you get what you get.

Doing so will also throw your $$warranty$$ right out the window as well ...

317 here, and it slips, I would take an educated guess that the motor is making 325 or more.

07 Cobalt SS LNF with Jannetty Racing tune, it slips between 3500 and 4000 RPM

I have HHR SS with Westers race tune running about 24 psi and it makes similar torque
to some other good tunes here -about 306 ft# at 3200 rpm. This massive low end torque
will make the clutch slip if you got WOT at lower rpms in 5th gear and at times 4th gear.
All others gears ok.
Talked to bunch of clutch vendors at SEMA and there appear to be some good
possibilties.

But to answer your question- Looks like over 300 ft# it will slip, especially at lower
rpm with tunes that use the stock turbo and retain its excellent low end torque.

clutch slipping

Thanks for the good information. I am looking at getting a 09 Cobalt SS but was a little concerned because I planned on modding it right off the showroom floor. I was debating between the Cobalt and the caliber srt4. Right now it looks like that srt4 has a lot more room to grow with the 6 speed and the forums show people getting about 400Hp and 390 trq and holding strong. but on the other hand the cobalt is a lot lighter and the suspension is far better.

Some Clutches will be better than others for many reasons, but I assure you it has nothing to do with the tune.

The Ability for a clutch to hold torque is dependent on its clamp load and friction material, and maybe the 08 is better than the 07 who knows for sure.

The one we had was an 07 with fairly low mileage but How it was driven from day one will affect how the clutch seats or breaks in, and ultimately how much torque it can hold.

Then you have Tollerence Stacking, and Manufacturing differences, and I am sure GM does not use just One Vendor for clutches, Usually Many.

Congrats to Synapse, on the LNF Turbo Upgrade, Very Impressive.

Synapse is using a different turbo which is bigger, which means a different powerband.

I'm assuming these slips are seen on a dyno in 4th gear when starting at low revs to get a broad rpm range recorded. Clutches always start slipping when in a higher gear at low rpm. I would be willing to bet the one that slips with 317 tq on the dyno doesn't do that during a drag race (where you won't see 3k rpm in 4th).

shrug

Please try a 5th gear WOT starting from 3200 rpm and tell us if you see any
slip. Also report boost level. Very interested in what u find as I have similar torque
and thought my clutch was in good shape.
Also what are your mods?

Thanks for any help.

I picked up the same thing. The 07 cobalt LNF must have had a different clutch

Man the FWD LNF clutch doesnt hold torque back like the RWD. We have smacked that little bitch (our GXP) with 400+wtrq it it took it on the chin.

Joe's CBSS slipped at 350wtrq.
