Think they'll total it out?

OK..lets go down this road if you will...
"I guarantee if I REALLY wanted to, I could slip the towing company owner $50 and he'd let me go over the car replacing aftermarket parts with stock ones(that i could get to)..."
So..you're SAYING THIS..is that what you PLAN ON DOING?? Sure...you can try anything you want. What you're SAYING isn't customary. Can this be done..sure, but it's not the norm.
"and buying cars back after they are totaled, is a common practice, because you can usually get them for almost nothing and they will give you the owner the 1st shot at buying them back before they sell them"
Are you going to BUY BACK THE CAR if they total it? Again..SAYING something and DOING IT are two different things. Don't use these arguments unless you plan on standing behind what you say.
Also..it's not clear cut..read this:
This may seem simple enough, however you could face a roadblock. If you have a newer car and the parts are worth a lot of money the car insurance company may not give you the option to keep your car after they total it out. They may very well want to auction it off because it would be beneficial for them. If this is to happen to you, you may have a chance at buying your car from the actual auction

I've had 2 vehicles totalled out thus far in my 14 years of legally driving (96 F-150, and a 06 F350.. both of the only Ford vehicles I have ever owned ironically.. lol), none of which were my fault mind you. Both trucks were done up with a bunch of aftermarket off-road goodies (15,000lbs winch, heavy duty bumpers and brush guards, lift kit, engine work, large mud tires, gears, built axles, yada yada yada). I purchased BOTH vehicles back without any issue or resistance from the insurance companies (this is also 2 different insurance companies). The f-350 (which was only 2 years old mind you) I bought back for only $3,500, and the f-150 I bought back for a whopping $300.
I'm wondering if the only time the insurance company will give you a hard time with buying back the vehicles is if you were actually deemed at fault for the accident.

my brother totaled his '94 Z28(his fault) and bought it back for $2500... and that was in like 1999... in fact, they called him asking him if he was interested in it... personally, i'm not... I mean the aftermarket parts that are useable are a ZZP downpipe and the catback w/ magnaflow muffler... and probably the forge BPV
but i'm not really that upset about losing a $150 downpipe, a $50 muffler, and a $100 BPV
other than that, as far as buying the car back, it'd be a lot of trouble stripping it down and there wouldn't be THAT much money to be made, a couple thousand maybe and it'd probably be a great gig for somebody.... I can think of a better way to spend my summer

Hmmm..... I don't get the free lunch comment lol...... He's the one who took an airbag in the face and had his life put at risk . Even with gap and a low deductable ... he's still getting a shitty deal IMHO. The time without a fun car to drive while waiting for the INS company suck..... especially this time of year.
The only reward he might get of it..... is the chance to start fresh with a new/used car .

As to the *free lunch* comment..well, I guess I should have expressed it another way. In NO WAY did I mean that *free lunch* should be taken as getting away with something.
I already said what I meant and I'm not gonna go there again.

There are ZERO positives in this situation...all you can do is make the best of it. The biggest plus...BY FAR..is he fact he walked away relatively unscathed.

Yeah ..... must have been just the way you worded it .... and taken out of context. You and I are like minded on most subjects so I was kinda surprised here. It's hard to read tone and context on the interwebs hehe...

got my accident report back, through his bull **** and lying, it didn't matter, they ruled in my favor, he was 100% at fault for failing to yield to traffic...
he has ZERO insurance, but I have uninsured motorist so i'm still good... he's just about to get raped by my insurance company, lol
also, being that now they are going to go after every penny from him, i'd say the chances of my car being totaled went from "probably" to "almost certain"

If you look at the prices lately they have gone up .... an 08 with 30K has a suggested retail of 18K and a private part value of over 16K..... so I'm guessing somewhere in the middle. 8)
High gas prices do have an upside for those who drive econo-boxes hehe.

That's so funny that you mentioned that cuz i was just on nada.com yesterday and my car is worth $21,525 including a $375 bonus for the low mileage on it. Last year it was at $18,xxx so hopefully it keeps going up lol.

I know it's kinda crazy right? Must be gas prices . Either that or now that chevy doesn't make a 2 door sport compact or something. I just looked a nada and it's 19.5K for my 09 with 25K on it and no sunroof hehe. It has a 650 dollar mileage bonus lol.

As much as these "estimates" on our values are nice...KBB doesn't sell cars...they're only worth what someone will give ya for 'em. On a trade it says my car's worth about 16xxx. I'd be shocked as heck to get 13 for it. I was offered 12 sometime last year for a trade. The real world and KBB are usually...well...a bit off, unfortunately. Although, I don't plan on getting rid of her. She's good to me
