If I am not mistaken because the car is front wheel drive the shifter is connected to the tranny by a cable maybe it is out of adjustment or something.

is the shifter "floppy"? Check the shifter cable bushings, there have been a few reports on the 08's of the bushings breaking. There is no adjustment on the shifter cables.

Then take it in - the car should be less than 6 months old, so I hope you are still under warranty .

The shifter connects via cables to the shift tower on the transmission. The clutch itself is a hydraulic master-slave setup, so no cables there.

actually there is. there are two cables that the actual "stick" manipulates to move the forks in the tranny. there is a clip on each cable and they can be unclipped and moved to adjust the linkage. but it doesn't really sound like that's his problem

The infamous roll pin issue is my guess, i'm surprised they haven't redesigned that yet.
