Turbo Spool...?

I'm not a car moron...I know the sound of spooling....

My car just hit 500km's... it now sounds almost like a kettle about to whistle?

Depending how hard I am on the thorttle...

Normal?

well, you will here that spool noise when you are at 0 or higher on your boost gage above 2000rpms. If your asking the question is that the turbo spool, then yes thats the turbo spooling up. It will still spool even when you are lightly on the gas as well and below 0 on the boost gage. The vacuum/boost gage tells you the air pressure before entering the intake manifold. Its like kinda holding a pin wheel while the wind is blowing, sure its not increase air velocity as it spins, but it does spin as a result of the wind passing by.

Well thats my take on the turbo anyways. When people use the line, "you save gas when the turbo is not engaged", they actually mean, you save gas when your not making boost before the intake manifold.

The answer to your question is yes, thats normal. sounds cool doesnt it?

I know that.... it just sounds very high pitched like a leak or something...

not like a sucking sound.... like it was for the first 500km's....

It's still holding boost so Iunno..

---------------------------------------------------

I think css.net got it in my head before I got my car that.. you can't hear the spool or the bpv..

I disagree 100%

You can absolutely hear the boost build, as well as the bypass valve during high-rpm shifts. Most people who have been in my car with little car knowledge ask "what's that whistle"? It certainly isn't subtle.

As for the BPV, you'll hear a rushing sound when you shift with full boost. It's not as pronounced as an atmospheric blow-off valve, but it's audible.

well, i dunno if this has anything to do with that, but it is twin scroll and also I think that its not a very large turbo so maybe the sucking comes off to you as a higher pitch sounding like a whistle. I like the sound, its clean and not obnoxious at all. gives your motor that subtle difference from the other cars on the road.

And I dunno if you should use the turn sucking, its more like blowing. If pressure is increasing in the charge piping its forcing air in, the engine has a natural vacuum and sucks air into it.

N/A motors suck
turbo motors blow

prostitutes do both for cheap

REPOST:

LOL I just used the term subtle to describe the turbo whereas FORCE just said the opposite.
I guess its not subtle compared to other stock turbos in the cobalt SS's class. but it is subtle to an evo or a wrx sti turbo IMO

I like the sound of the bpv versus a blow-off

BPV sounds like it means business

The BPV does have an air "rushing sound" sort of like the blob Wobafet on Pokemon: VROOOOOOOM, clutch in, "woba woba fet", shift, clutch out, VROOOOOOOM...

It's hard to describe but I do notice it making a different sound when I get on it lower in the band (2500-3000) versus higher up around 4500-5000. I THINK what I'm hearing is the increase in rushing air since the turbo is already spooled and hovering between vacuum and push at this point, but I can't really describe the difference in sound.

If your turbo's holding boost that means there's no leaks so I suspect everything is fine .

Also: At lower RPMs you aren't drowning it out with exhaust noise. There's also some fancypants science behind your five senses that'll tell you why you don't process sounds very well at WOT or, more specifically, when you're going fast and need your eyes more than your ears. That's all moot though, the pitch definitely changes!

The exhaust snaps/snarls when you let off the throttle, but you can't mistake it for a V8.

I hear the rumble when I am at drive thrus of fast food places on quiet nights. Sounds like a totally different car! Something about the way the exhaust sound echos off the ground and the brick wall of the building, totally sexy! You hear it the most when you accelerate a little between the first and second drive thru window.

is your car stock or modded? because i know a friend of mine had that same issue with his turbo sounding like a tea kettle lol it turns out he had a boost leak on his BPV from the gasket that was on there (on a Speed 3 tho) and basically wasnt hitting boost and his turbo was over-spooling...make sure you check for leaks somewhere otherwise over-spooling the turbo can mean big problems and big $$$...if you're hearing a sound ur not used to its always good to check even if theres nothing wrong

find a nice tunnel or go under a bridge and let it rip....hearing the exhaust echo in a tunnel = pure sex!!

Stock

I'm not worried about it, still holding 15-18lb's of boost on average today

I can't get enough of this car, I just want to drive it 24/7

I hear the Wobbafet noise if I rev to 6000 RPM in 1st gear but let off the throttle to shift to 2nd gear (basically avoid a NLS).

the older the car gets the louder it will be. once everything gets broken in. mine got really loud after a while. plus a K&N drop in helps lol
