Turbocharger problems need help

hey guys I'm sort of new here. I have an 09 tc and recently it started feeling slow, I would floor it and the boost gauge wouldn't go past 5. then after like 20 mins of driving the check engine light came on, checked the code, forgot what code it gave me but when I looked it up it said air leak or turbo malfunction. Took it to the chevy dealer maybe they could find what was wrong with it since the one I go to are always very helpful and really know what they're doing. when the car was off for a while and I started driving again it would pick up pretty fast but not as it used to be then after driving for a while the car feels sluggish again. The guys at serivce told me I need a new turbo charger because it keeps shutting down. I was thinking I might pay around $1,300 I can deal with that. but they said turbo plus labor would be about $3,500 I forgot the exact price but that's nuts! did anybody have a similar problem? any suggestions on what I should do? could it be something else other than the turbocharger? when I start from 0 and hit the gas I can feel the power and I notice the boost gauge go up to 10. the check engine light its still on obviously. some help? does any cobalt ss drivers live around the westchester ny area who are more knowledgeable in mods, my car is all stock and if I can fix this I'm going to try to change a few parts. thanks guys

If you have to install a new turbo i would either go for the ko4r or the zfr might as well

That was the identical symptoms for me a couple years back - turned out one of the suspension bolts carved into the bottom of the intercooler pipe. Definitely the first thing you should look for.

I also had an error like that after I had the stealership do the GMS1 when the car was new. They wrapped the new sensor connections in electrical tape - every time the connectors got wet the readings I'd throw a CEL, and bye-bye boost. Had to fix their shoddy connections and weatherproof 'em.

At least check for shaft play/oil leak in the turbo you have. And replacing it isn't all that hard there's plenty of info on this site from what i see.

Get the actual code and post it. I know there's a lot more SS folks down state by you but if you wanted to make the trek to albany I'd be happy to take a look

I'm not all too far from Westchester county if you'd care to give me a crack at fixing the issue.

I'm 15-20 minutes east of Danbury. Right off 84. PM me and we can discuss things a little more.

I would have to go with everyone else. It is most likely a boost leak. There is a possibility the turbo is causing the issue but it is rather rare compared to boost leaks. Anyways if you go and look at it for him 09 let us know what you find. I'm curious.

I just had the same problem, my dealership fixed, was caused by the BPV sticking.

Dealership cleaned and adjusted it.

Runs good now. They also say I have a bad MAF. Recommended I do myself, since GM would rape me for the cost of the MAF.

Anyone recommend a brand for aftermarket MAF? There is almost a dozen available.

Now be careful, if it was a P0101 code, the dealer assumes it is a bad MAF, be we have found it's likely a boost leak.
