Wheel sensors
Wheel sensors
i just got a second set of wheels, one for daily driving and one for road track days. do i have to have another set of sensors? will i get an error code and that is it? or will it cut power to the car? cany you override it?
Thanks
Thanks
Wheel sensors are pretty easy to take off and put on. You just have to be pretty carefull not to break them in doing so. They essentially screw off and screw on. Did you get new tires to go with the new wheels? If So, you gotta put the wheel sensors on the new wheels or reprogram new sensors as im not sure you can override them, and trust me, you dont want to be spending 300-500$ on just one sensor. Or you can just deal with having your idiot light on constantly.
You don't need to have them...you will have the dash light on...
I would not recommend changing them from wheel to wheel often...I think every time they are removed and reinstalled you have to replace the valve stem...could get very expensive...
If you are just using a second set for track, I'd keep them in your street tires and not put them in your track wheels.

I highly recommend getting a second set. They can be broken during removal. Plus they will have to be moved each time you change your wheels. If you do not have tpms on your wheels then your car will register a "check wheel" error in your information center and there will be a yellow caution light that will remain on. Spending a little more on a set of sensors is worth the time and is a great investment.
PS. The wheel error will not effect the car's performance...

i would buy a second set even thoe you dont have to break down the tire all the way to switch them it still is anoying. and there always is the chance of breaking them and gm is getting strict on broken sensors for warranty.
My wheel sensors never seem to be right anyways. They always seem to be like 4 lbs too high. I have checked them with like 3 different manual pressure gauges and get the same results. Wonder if GM would fix those for me??
Both my factory and second set of tpms sensors are off... I wouldn't worry about it too much... As long as you know the difference it should be fine. It appears that this is a common problem...
Yes, you will need to purchase another set of sensors unless you want to live with the tire pressure warning light always being on when you're racing. I"m also not sure if it alters the programming in the stability control system when it detects a low tire pressure or malfunction, which might not be a problem is you fully disable ESC but if you use Competitive Mode might be an issue (I don't think so but can't say for certain).
GM used wheel stem mounted pressure sensors and they aren't anywhere near that expensive. You can find them cheaper elsewhere, but a new set runs just over $200 at the Tire Rack for OEM quality replacements. The owner's manual has the procedures to reset/reprogram the system when you change the wheel or do a rotation.

are the only cars with the sensors the ss and the GT? I have the LT and would like to know. How much are a second set of sensors and would you still have to get the computer re-calibrated every time you change tires?
