1st gear problem

Hey everyone, I was hoping some one would have some info to help me with my problem.

Every now and then when I try shifting into 1st gear from a dead stop it will not go in. After I shift into a couple other gears and try again it goes right in. This isn't a constant problem but it happens enough that it's getting very annoying, I'm going into a local dealership here in Florida (I'm on vacation) in the morning. Has any one else had similar problems?

All information is welcome!

Mine has done that a time or two sometimes the gears are between teeth and will not mesh properly the car has to move either foward or backward a hair to get it into gear.

I hope not

This isn't a rare occurence at all, it happens about 50% of the time if not more.

If it is happening all the time it is likely either the shift cables needs to be adjusted or you have a bad 1st gear syncro.

Alright, I have to be at the dealer at 8am tomorrow. Hopefully they can fix the problem. It didn't start until I was on my way down here and I couldn't get it into 1st at all, I actually had to let the clutch out a tad and slightly grinded it and then it went right into first.

Probably your first gear syncro from what you just described. Hopefully they can duplicate the issue.

I have the same issue, not very often. Im going to have them look at it when my car is in for the other issue.. the door rubs the fender when it is cold outside.

Alright, thanks for the input. I'll suggest the problem to them. I'm sure they won't have a problem duplicating it.

If you keep pressure on first gear and slowly let out the clutch, it should let it slip in.

Tried that once but it wouldn't go in until it started to grind and I immidietely pushed the clutch back in and it went right into 1st.

Not good. It shouldn't take grinding to get it in. Take it to GM! It will probably take them a few days just to tell you that it's not going into first properly, lol.

It could be normal as the others said. Just lift your foot off the clutch quickly (in neutral of course) and push it back down and try to go into 1st. It should slide in easily after that. A little blip of the throttle helps it slip in also.

Ya, same here. Reverse always works and so does messing with the clutch. It also happened in my Acura RSX all of the time.

says in the manual if it doesnt go in 1st or reverse either push the clutch in and out again or shift to another gear and back in to 1st or reverse

This happens on all manual cars.... or at least all the ones i've been in. Chances are you wont find yourself between the teeth all the time. going from 2nd gear to 1st is a good solution for that but even better solution is to go from reverse to 1st.

Update!

Update!

Went to the dealer this morning and they failed to duplicate the problem, I even drove around with the tech for half an hour and we couldn't get it to happen again so he told me to make sure I go through all the gears when slowing down and to bring it back if it started happening more often.

lol, yesterday this was happening every other time I came to a stop though, it hasn't happened at all yet today so maybe it was just a temporary problem?

its sounds like you need to go to the casino since your lucky enough land between teeth at every stop!
