300+ WHP Cobalts ENTER HERE (Tire Q&A)

For those of you that make over 300WHP looking more for the 350-400WHP range for opinions.

I will be using the stock 18 inch SS/TC rims , Is there a tire out there that will hook up 350WHP through a 40 sidewall? If so what would you recommend?

I was looking at picking up a Dot Compound hoosier but they are like 250 each and if they don't hook it will be a huge waste of money.

So what tire hooks on stock rims?

u need one or the other? milage or traction cant have both!

i would use a street tire i personaly have toyo proxe 4s i love them and i have 4kmiles on them and they're at about half life witch is expected.

but i work around tires all day and would recomend the toyos like i have or bfg kdws witch i belive might have just been removed from the line but replaced with a new modle>>> super sports i belive.

but i love my toyos at the track i do a smokey burn out (not going in the water) then they are glued down pretty good!

I would go with a Nitto NT01 or NT05 before I went with a Toyo.

I ran my MT Drag Radials all summer. 40 lbs of air on the street. 18 lbs at the track. I dont drive it in the rain with them. They still look like new. Put my regular tires back on at the end of Oct.

Yeah I have Thompsons on the other car and they have been good for almost a year now, around 4K miles and they get raced on and driven around on. They still look really good.

I am either going to go with an NT01 / Thompson / Hoosier A6.

I will probably end up biting and going with a Thompson or Hoosier. Its just for an 18 in tire they are ******* pricey. Even for just 2.

Yeah , I always read up on stuff as my fronts have been rotated to the rear , currently my car is just chilling in the sub zero garage right now I need tires pretty bad the old fronts look like slicks. I once read that the higher priced tires with a harder compound/ply will wear faster and that you don't really want to buy the most expensive hardest tires unless you are intending them to be a track only tire , just get a medium compound, most of the other brands people listed are in the 175 dollar range and they should get the job done without blowing the whole wad on tires that are just going to get eaten up by the roads , I know where I live I will not be buying any extreme tires in that 250 price range after seeing how fast these medium softer stock conti's lasted , I have 17K on them and lots of sand and rough surfaces they lasted pretty good I would have rated them a 7 out of 10 for being stock ..

It's so hard to make the tire decision I am so torn on what to do, I was like you until I read a lot of articles about low pro tires etc and I am still at a loss , totally has to do with what you wanna spend but I would just get a medium grade tire IMO

I used to have a Cobalt SS/SC with a 2.6 60lbers, intake, full exhaust, Canned tune (BCP) and I had stock rims with either a 235 or 245 up front.

The car hooked GREAT from 20's, they were Dunlop Super Sport Race Tires (discontinued in 2006). They were awesome.

for street/road coarse i usually run a bridgestone re-11. i have tried running a radial on this car yet since i didnt get much time to go out. but if i was honestly looking for like a drag radial i would go with a hoosier or mickey thompson.

Your question is vague, are you looking for an autox/track tire or drag? If you plan on using an autox tire the sidewalls are stiff, you'll definitely have better grip but you'll still spin with 300+whp... Go with a drag tire if you want to "hook" up..

for drag racing you want the smallest rim possible that you can fit....on these car a 17 unless you convert the brakes. um a taller wider tire would be ideal.

with that much power you won't hook up in 2nd gear unless you aren't floored.

You do know that Toyo owns Nitto right? NT-01 is great for the road course or autocross. NT05 is more of a hybrid street and track tire. If you want strait line traction only mickey thompson makes an ET street DR in size 245/40/18.

I have the MT DR's on 17's and really like them, I imagine the 18" will be even better, they are a lil wider then what I run. I was able to pull thru 1st with TQ Management at 100% even.

If you get sticky tires....you will have to change your name

Me too, but they hate the cold (obviously) and they suck in the wet. They don't seem to be wearing down any faster than the stock continentals. Maybe I just spin less with them.

just remember more traction means more stress on other components which can cause premature wear. as long as your fine with that, mt et streets(cheater slicks) are the way to go

Those tires are terrible IMO. No wet traction at all.
