Update: Got call from dealer and the engine is toast and GM approved a new motor, said it will be about 5 business days to get new motor and then 1-2 days for install so will have car back in roughly 2 weeks.

That's good. Mine was built May 19 2008, so I think I'm in the clear as far as this problem goes. Almost at 50k and nothing yet *knocks on wood*

Is there a specific build period to expect this porosity issue? Does it affect all LNF platforms, i.e. HHR SS, Sky Redline etc.?

My build date was late 2008 and its a 2009. I had it replaced at 14,000 miles. I fought tooth and nail with my dealer/GM for 95 days before they actually took apart the block and went Oh looky..porous block issue...that you said...95 days ago...sorry? morons.. never going back there again thats forsure.

My block was probably borderline. My cars build date was 4/09. I had no coolant loss ever and the motor has 45k on it.

I hate every time one of these threads come up, scares the crap out of me.... Mine is an 09 but I don't know my build date, where are you all finding your motor's build date? Is it not possible that the car's build date and the motors could be quite different?

The build date is on the sticker on the driver side door.

It's possible that the build of the motor and the car could be that far apart. But unlikely.

A build ate vs. porous block thread is needed for sure.

With just in time building I doubt its more than a couple weeks. It's expensive to build stuff and stick it in a warehouse for months.

They're cracking. They don't have little microscopic holes that seep gallons of coolant...

WRX's burn oil like mad, have a tendancy to crack ringlands, chew through turbo seals, and also have a propentity to spin rod bearings/throw rods if you make any amount of power that is significantly more than stock.

Grass is always greener on the other side.

Look the new engine over when you get it. Seems like they may be all out of LNF'S Got my car Monday with a LHU in it. Hopefully the new sand casting will be less prone to cracking or porous blocks whichever is the cause.

The 2.0-liter Ecotec turbo has a new precision sand cast aluminum cylinder block that provides better durability while transmitting less noise and vibration than lost foam casting used previously.

Ringlands was a 2009 issue. No other year. Only heard of 1 rod bearing in an 11+(which I'm assuming he's talking about). It was an STI making 350ish. There are a lot making 400+. Haven't heard of any burning oil or turbo seal issues.

Really? An LHU as a replacement? Is the PCM and tuning from an LNF?

Yea i love the look of the 5-doors and if i get it i don't really plan on modding it until the warranty runs out , even light modding on the cobalt has come to bite me so the WRX will most likely stay stock until the warranty is over
