Best Intercooler?

I know this has been talked about on a differetn thread but I want to clear it up for people who are looking to buy the best one. And since my best downpipe thread was very informational I was thinking this would be too.

Make sure to make a post if you feel there is anything I missed or you have something to say.
C-Max unkown price

Crazy Steve's $250

Synapse $450

Hahn $720

Dejon $575

Hahn is probably the best but costs the most. I have a synapse and had a weld crack at one of the end tanks on the seam. Might be a poor weld or its because its squared and might have too much turbulance at high boost pressures. The stock one is rounded on the end tanks as well as the hahn. Dont know for sure just an opinion.

I assume thats not the real picture of the Synapse?

Don't own an intercooler yet, but if I was purchasing off these pictures alone......... my top choice would be the Hahn so far. End tanks are much better thought out than any of the others pictured IMO.

My vote is Synapse.... good price for a huge intercooler!

***does require some trimming of the inside skeleton of the bumper, you will not see any of this from the front***

I just question the pressure drop and HP capacity of Crazy Steves. His looks to be the 1st or 2nd best flowing design. His cores look like the ebay ones, but I dont know if they are. Either way 250 for an IC beats the hell out of the stocker. If his could handle 400 HP and there is no pressure drop at 22PSI, I would consider his.

Since air flows more/less like water (correct?) wouldn't most of the air in an intercooler like crazy steve's tend to flow across the bottom portion of the intercooler? Seems to me that would be the path of least resistance and avoid the upper portion. A good portion of the upper IC is obscured by the crash bar anyway I guess.

That being said I know people with pretty much that exact eBay looking core and they’ve made A LOT of power.

Uh, bull **** my friend. He is the one I called to ask what to trim! Believe me he had to trim!

My Synapse has shown me a drop in IAT2's of about ~20*! At my power level that is good enough work for me!

For the price, I'd go synapse. That's the route I'm going once I decide to throw the $$$ for an intercooler.

Yeh thats my thinking as well. The only reason why I would buy it is because CrazySteve's and Hahns have bent entry's and exits. All the rest are squared. I wish someone would track down the core dimensions and HP rating for each IC. Maybe someone could through in some IAT2 stats too.

lol what? Try factoring in the fact that water is WAAAAYYYY more denser than air, lol. Thus the gravitational effect of water is way for extreme than air. With the Air being pressurized, im pretty sure the whole IC would fill up with air.

Air does flow fluently like water does but can move in way more directions than water since its not held down as extreme as water is.

Hahns core is the biggest you can get... period. But at a point you need to realize where to big meets little turbo.

I can here the turbo scream more now with this intercooler, meaning it's working harder to provide the same amount of boost as before. Now with that being said.... the bigger the core the better the cooling is going to be, and also the slower the spool is.

Not that we couldn't help to have a little slower spool time... but as I have said before... I have logged ~20* drops in temperatures with the Synapse Intercooler...

Speaking of GBs we should get one on the Intercooler kit from Synapse... Looks like a good deal CPs and I for about $1k, if we could get more off of that that'd be great

Thus the (correct?) in my post. I'm a grossly overpaid UNIX Admin for a living, not an engineer with a background in fluid dynamics. It just seems that most high dollar intercoolers out there, no matter what the platform, use a more centered approach to inlet/outlet. They usually utilize smoothly shaped or even cast end tanks too on the higher end intercoolers.

Not saying they're any better, just a pattern I've noticed over the years. I also realize we're not building F1 cars here either.

1badBlueberrySC brings up a good point though. In my DSM years it was really common for people to put literally 1000hp+ IC's on 14b/16g small frame turbo cars and slow them down. That Smax intercooler pictured is just out of hand and reminds me of when it seemed like a competition to put the largest IC you could on the SRT4's, power results be damned.

When I'm in the market for an IC I'll most likely opt for the Hahn or Synapse, just depending on who has the better deal at the time!
