Blown K04 Maybe?

So im almost positive my K04 blew last night. Just got trifecta tuned and loaded a revision to the tune. Was driving normal and did about 2 pulls today in about 85 degree weather and noticed a weird sound almost like a pulsating of air while under full boost. Then im cruising along and I feel a sudden stumble in my engine. I try to build boost and get this loud whine. I get it towed home and inspect.

I listened to the turbo and it sounds like a blender. I checked the BPV and it was intact. Checked IC and CP with no visible cracks. Checked shaft play and had enough oil in the turbo inlet to leave about a 1-2oz pool on my garage floor. Had up and down play and also had what I think is a decent amount of in and out play. So im pretty sure its blown. Reading the thread linked below, I have pretty much the same symptoms. Prior to this I always noticed a small amount of oil in the inlet and a oil smell in the exhaust. What you guys think?

This thread is a pretty much exact match

it sounds like it'd be quite blown.... replacement k04, k04+, or ZFR is best plan of attack

True but the 1000 difference isnt too justifiable for me right now. Hearing you car sound like a glorified blender at 70moh is a bad feeling

Was looking at the zfr and installing looks like a pita. Saw this at zzp? Is it really that cheap and the exact same thing? Dealer wants $1400 for the stock k04

Any shaft plan on the turbo is no good. You might have to change your bpv over to the new turbo but that's not a big deal

Figured. Can i reuse my lines? Or should I get the $75 coolant lines etc? My turbo has always had a small amount of play and oil. But this was a big amount of oil and in and out play I had never before seen. ZZP offer a warranty on the K04?

You can reuse your lines and everything. Everything is same.

Its hard to say what "safe" is in terms of psi of boost

When I replace this turbo, will i need a new manifold seal? Or a new new seal for any of the exhaust components?

Just a little update. Dealer cracked it open. Confirmed blown turbo.

$700 parts and labor later I will back back in the game.

So weird that it waited to blow when I was in vacuum

I have been on 24 psi for a year now and have no problems, its just bad luck man. There are some people who are on 30 psi and have had no problems

It has to do with your tune too.

Yeah well the tune spikes at 24 then settles around 23. It only pulls about 8 degrees of advance at wot. I dont think its that on edge. I mean it is trifecta but its not the final tune.

Yeah I think one of my main issues is not letting the turbo cool down. Doing like 1-2 pulls, stopping at the store and immediately shutting it down

Good way to kill turbo seals and bake the journal bearing by doing that

Yeah but I did that on the stock tune so I didnt think to much of it. I hear the in and out play i found is the thrust plate and the excess oil in the inlet is probably a blown seal. Does that sound right?
