These are exactly the parts I just had to have get replaced - GM dealership only charged ~ $50 for each, however the labor behind this was insanely expensive ($600+). 2008 T/c which just passed 90k miles - first things to really go on the car. What I don't understand is I've had them change the oil every time, always (presumably) with the right oil - how the hell does this happen?
Unplug electrical connection, remove bolt, pull solenoid out, slide new solenoid in, tighten bolt, plug in connection. Done. Repeat for other one if needed.
It sounds like they charged you the labor for the physical phasers instead of these solenoids. I believe they are both listed as actuators, so maybe they looked up the wrong labor time associated with it and then didn't say anything about it. It takes some time to replace one or both physical phasers. It took me five minutes to replace both of these solenoids though.

mine went at 45000 kms. my new motor has about 15000 kms on it now so i should be expecting them to go again soon. the original motor in my car cracked between the water pump and oil pan at 60 000 miles. or about 100 000kms. I'm hoping I got a crap motor last time and it doesnt happen again.
Sure hopefully you can see it attached below. I also have higher resolution images available as well. I just blocked out my cell & advisor's name.
You should be able to see the 2 part numbers (listed as $50 each) and then the huge labor cost immediately below (labor set to $459.00)
Also - don't judge my poor car's mileage

Holy bajeezus... You got seriously hosed. Where's Sarah from GM Customer Service? She needs to see this.
For sure go back and get $445 of your money back. Also noticed that they just replaced the bulbs in your headlights when you said it didn't work from switching it but worked with keyless entry. Curious if THAT did anything...

Well, like I stated earlier, they probably looked up the labor for the physical phasers on the cams, and not the phaser solenoids. I believe they are both labeled as "Phaser Actuators", so it might have been easy to get them confused.
Swapped mine out, for the new upgraded ones.
The noise that I had is now gone...
I had the strangest noise on cold startups , for months.
The noise only lasted, maybe one second, some sort of gear,
'grabbing' or 'catching' into place, type of noise.
I had thought that it was some sort of oil 'drain-back' issue.
