Cold start issue

I've had an issue for quite awhile now I cant figure out. When I start the car on a cold morning it will backfire and pop and try to stall out for about 20 seconds or so. I dont think its tune related as I have loaded some older tunes to test it out with the same results. Its an LDK build. I'm wondering if it might just be the nature of stage 2 cams on a cold day. Runs perfect after 30 seconds, just that first start it coughs

the moment it fires hit the gas and hold it at 2500-3000 for 10 seconds or so. Should purr like a kitten after that.

..

Yeah, afraid the issue has persisted thru a few sets of plugs. I guess I may have to tap the gas to hold rpm's up as armcclure suggests, but it bugs me that it didnt always do that.

After 30 seconds or so you have gone into closed loop and the PCM is adjusting fuel according to what it sees from the O2. The popping, backfiring is most likely lean.
If it didn't do it before the cam change that is most likely it. As long as you are sure you haven't acquired a vacuum leak recently, fatten up your open loop tables. There are 2. In gear and in Neutral / Park.
