bigger wheels, wider tires, faster steering ratio. all of that changes how steering input feels

The LNF has different steering knuckles, tires, quicker steering ration and different wheels and tires.

beat me to it;

(but I believe the power assist is different to.)

As it was summed up in the SS/TC video I have (sales staff training video to be exact) everything about the steering is different from the SS/TC and all other Cobalts.

man I waited for ever to buy it off ebay...

I was kinda hoping some one else would pony up for it, because I can waste my money like a mandman...

to prove my point I also bought the 2005 sales training video - for the SS/SC section.

umm, to answer your question, that's a no;
I'm technologically impaired so I wouldn't have a clue how to share it - that is, if it wasn't likely illegal for me to share it...

i assumed it was a quicker rack and the wider stickier tires but it just seemed like a pretty huge difference. it would make sense to have less assist on the LNF cars tho.

Lightbulb Take a look at page 8.

It would appear that it does - linky .

Now, the question becomes - was the recall replacement correct for the SS's ?

There was a thread a while back about how after the recall the steering seemed lighter - mine, too.

?

well if it was a slower motor then they probably just replaced all cobalts with the same motor. same speed.

Even my gf's 09 lt became lighter, so I would assume generic part...

There is definitely a different feel, however as others said it's likely due to the extra tire, suspension weight, different ratio, etc. The motor could be giving the same amount of assist in both cases, but with the LNF car you have to use a little more leverage to account for the above differences.

Of course, I've also heard the LNF uses a completely different steering motor from all the other cobalts as well. Not sure how true that is.

I'd wager considering the supply & demand for replacement steering components, I'd wager that any cars getting fixed under the recall are in fact getting generic parts.

I do recall looking up my car's vin before I bought it (almost a month before the recall became huge ect), and almost all SS's were not on the suspected bad list of vins (this list no longer exists once the recall was for all Cobalts)...
I for one will not bring my car in unless I have a problem...
I men it's not like we have truly electric steering like some of the toyotas - because I can turn the wheel on a car with the ignition off/battery disconnected ~ which should be impossible if there was nothing mechanical connecting the steering wheel to the rack...
(at least that's the way I see it)

No Toyotas, or any production cars at this time, have truly electric steering (or in a sense, digital steering). While the technology is there, just like brakes - for safety (and probably other) reasons - the steering wheel must remain mechanically connected to the wheels.

Angry Well - I follow your logic, but ...

The assclowns at the dealership I took the car in for GMS1 issues took it upon themselves to change the steering motor out, w/o my requesting it ...

Mine did occasionally get the "morning sleepies" for the briefest of bits, so who knows - maybe it was for the best they changed it.

Still pisses me off that they did it w/o asking , though, as they sure could not find the GMS1 problem ,and the red Onstar light that they could not see was right there, pretty as a picture, when I picked up the car.

Maybe the tech is colorbling ?

Yeesh.

iirc if they do not have replacement motors handy they are supposed to add shims to get the right resistance - but as a GM tech put it to me, "that fix is BS".

otherwise they are supposed to replace the motor - as initially they knew the suspected bad batches by the cars vin (which is to say they traced which cars recieved motors from any given batch) ~ and iirc ideally the recall is a R&R fix...

Mine went out completely, so I had no choice. Steering feels exactly the same to me, but now it makes a noise.

All Cobalts have electric-assist power steering.
