Fellow SS/TC owners...

Alright who else on here owning an SS/TC lives somewhere that gets snow? I live in Boston and Im starting to try to plan ahead about what Im going to do to make my car as good in the snow as it can be. I know theres been a lot of talk about the big brakes in the front not fitting any smaller steel wheels. Im just curious what other people have planned. I was just looking, and Dunlop, Pirelli, Michellin and Bridgestone all have decent Winter tires that would fit our stock rims. At least that covers getting snow tires, but Id rather not leave my stock rims on over the winter to be eaten away at by all the salt. Anybody have any good ideas? I think Im going to look around and see what I can find for used rims that would fit on our cars....I dont care what they are as long as they fit and I can get winter rubber for them.

I'm also in MA, and haven't decided what I'm doing yet. Was going to buy a set of SC wheels and put winters on them, but not really a huge fan of using spacers. From all the wheel/tire places I've been, not one has had any wheels under 200ea and I'm not spending a crap load of money for winter wheels. As much as I don't want to, might be putting winters on my stockers...

spacers arent that bad, especially when u only need to use them for a short time. Thats probably the best bet, get a cheap pair of 16-17 inch steelies and buy a set of spacers.

I am leaning towards going with a second winter beater car.

However with the traction control/etc that these cars have, snow tires on the stock wheels has crossed my mind also.

But If I find a good deal on a slider for the winter, I will prob lean that way.

17" rims with a spacer in the front and you're golden.

I wish it was but Ive already got 2 cars. I had too sell my Avalanche cause of gas prices while Im in Paramedic school...I just couldnt afford it....thats how I ended up with the SS. So with the Vette and SS a winter beater would be crazy, I cant justify having 2 cars sitting around all winter. I was thinking what a couple of you were, getting used 17"s from an SC. Also, Im wondering what the base model Impalas and Malibus use for steelies...they must be 17s.....maybe they'll fit. Im going to check into that now.

......looks like the biggest available GM steelies are 16" off the Impala LS

Have we determined if we can get 16" wheels over the Brembos? Because if so, the 94-02 Camaro Steelies are 16"x7.5"....they might fit, and theyre very easy to get and cheap.

After a lot of thought, I'm just going to get a set of all weather tires on my stock rims. I don't need to replace the Conti's (at only 3,000 miles), but this will end up costing less in the long run. Granted, I love to drive her hard in the summer, but I'm not autocrossing or going to the track, so I think getting off the summer only tires will be an OK choice.

I'm looking at getting a set of Bridgestone Potenza Pole Positions...

Ideally, I'd like to get some steelies for winter, but spacers are a bad idea...

Not really. So long as they aren't too big you should be safe. I asked a bearing engineer about this just the other day.

15mm should be enough to clear the brake calipers while not putting too much strain on the bearings.

Now as for the 17" steel wheels on the Malibu's and Aura's this is what I intend on running...I will keep you all updated.

Yeah...it isn't one of those things that you should avoid like the plague, but it is just something that would bother me about running...I just don't feel comfortable doing it....

haha well my second car is a 1980 vette which slides like a ************ in the RAIN if youre not careful haha, so that may be a bad idea.

The 17" steelies from the Malibu sound like a good idea, thats what I had been considering.

I'm buying a set of 17" BSA 264s from Steelcase Tire N' Mag just south of Steeles, near the 404/DVP cut-off.
