Depends on a few variables, but once a year seems pretty realistic (which is my service interval). I use a good synthetic high temp grease but you really don't need a whole bunch. Just enough to coat the plunger and O-rings. Just make sure you cycle the valve by hand a few times before you reinstall it.

why do you need a how to? unscrew it. Very LIGHTLY coat the cylinder with high temp grease. don't get grease on the nose of the piston. screw it back together. It couldn't be more simple. There are only 3 pieces if you count the spring, and they only go together one way.
