"Going against the grain" - K&N Intake filter placement
So the general consensus for the filter placement for the K&N intake has always been to put the metal rib in the 11:30-12:30 position. When I bought my K&N I had no way to monitor fuel trims or anything for that matter. I followed suit based on other people's time, work, and data collection. Then I joined the broken ring land club and bought Aeroforce gauges while I was at it.
Since then. I've kept it in that same position - about 11:30 for me. My LTFT's stayed in the +6-8 range depending on if I went more 11:30 or more 12:30.
So last night, I decided to get radical. I put the metal rib DOWN... maybe about 6:00. The logo on the end is exactly right side up. My results?
Well the 20 minute drive to work this afternoon with some highway and some city yielded a drop to +2.3 LTFT's. My drive home it dropped down to +1.5 LTFT's.

let me get this straight, you think this has something to do with the direction the filter itself is clocked on the intake piping and not ambient air conditions?

I watched it for MONTHS now since spring time always at +6-8. I've NEVER seen it lower than maybe +4... EVER. Until now, but I'll continue to watch and if anyone wants me to report back in a week, or a month or whatever. I will.
I'm not shutting the door to the idea that it could be ambient air changes but I have very strong doubts because of the amount of time that I've been watching it stay +6-8 with an occasional dip to +4.

The hole to the intake tube on the K&N filter is not centered so rotating it can affect LTFTs. Tons of threads and information on it. This is the most recent.

One week update.
I have the metal rib pointed dead center towards the hole that the stock snorkel entered.
So far I've never seen more than +3.9 ltft and zero knock. I was getting 3-6* from 3k-4.5k rpm before. That is gone as well. I've been using the exact same gas station and drive 200+ miles a week.
It does read knock on very light acceleration when engine is still very cold but no biggie.
Call bs... Blame it on whatever you like. I'm just giving you the results that I've seen from my interceptor guages.
