How hard is it to use HPtuner?

and self tune for a novice.

All I want is 20psi and the ability to put on an intake and write back to stock anything more than that is just frosting

There is a lot of how to for the LNF in the HPTuners GM L4 forum.

A bit of a learning curve getting familiar with HPT though. Many of us there help out and/or can Etune you once you have it if need be.

It's not difficult, but there is a lot of information that you should learn before trying to "make 20psi"

There are configurations for the LNF posted there, but you still need to enter some histograms to log everything you need to adjust the fuel trims, like I said it takes a bit of time to learn it, it's not really plug and play.

Go to the library and teach yourself. There are plenty of books out there on EFI tuning.

hptuners forums have EVERYTHING, also the tune repository has tunes from other folks (don't rely on them), but good to take a look. You can ask questions on the hptuners forums, I was sucessful with trial and error, but didn't do anything retardedly out of hand there is a little more than just "increasing boost"

pretty straight forward for the most part, it actually tells you what your changing and how it would effect your car....

most of the descriptions are vague though

I don't have an lnf, but the lsj tables for beginners are kind of vague like I said. good luck though guys, it's defiantly paid for itself the amount of times I saved on a tuner.

I spent about 2-3 months of constant reading on hpt forums and all around the web to get to where I am "tuner"-wise. I have a decent understanding of everything, but there are still some members far far more knowledgeable than I am.

It's not really something can just jump right in to without knowing anything, even though HPT has limited tables on the LNF, you can still severely mess some stuff up if you change something without knowing what you are doing.

Here's some good links to start off with in your quest for tuning knowledge.

Thoughts on Tuning and the LNF. - HP Tuners Bulletin Board
The LNF Tuning Guide - HP Tuners Bulletin Board
LNF STFT and LTFT Tuning - HP Tuners Bulletin Board

Pretty much just read that entire forum haha.. Lot's of good stuff in there, including me being a frustrated idiot.

Good luck to you guys if you decide to get it, I've found it totally worth it, so much control over the car. Plus it's a point of pride to know you've tuned your own car.

Darn, no YouTube guides either... well at least from what I saw. It seemed more generalized.

Anyway I did see a lot of HPtuner vs XXXXXX videos, there's even one with a GMS1 beating it. I just typed in "HPtuner Cobalt"

99% of the info on the hpt forums is a joke. the blind leading the blind if you will.

lsj and lnf tuning is cake walk compared to lsx.

Yeah its definately not easy for someone that has never touched any software related to tuning. I have had mine for roughly a month and have not gotten a chance to use to to much. Got the basics down like logging and uploading new tunes but have not even started in trying to smooth timing tables or adjusting for afr.

The forums do have good information on them but still might not be enough for a novice person. Read read read and ask questions is all i can say. I have looked at stock tunes from GM only so far and have seen the changes from Stock 06 all the way up to GM2 and GM3. Not a big difference between GM2 and GM3, believe it was 13 differences.

Best of luck

you only see what hptuners has unlocked to see. what you don't see is the background settings that make the difference

lsx tuning sucks.

worse yet, duramax tuning. You would think Oh no problem it's not that complicated, until you find out how difficult tuning a workhorse engine can be for longevity.

HPT is very easy to use if you've tuned before, but for someone that has no idea what they're looking at, it will be quite overwhelming. Spend some time reading the HPT forum, and see if you can get someone to help you out. Do NOT change things that you don't understand. You can destroy your engine if you screw up.

Army: it's a lot easier to tune my old 97 Dodge Ram 2500 turbo diesel! I've left it stock though, so I don't have to worry about the trans going. It's one vehicle I don't feel like screwing with much.
