one on the downpipe.

I've seen people get confused because they say "three-way catalyst". That just means it removes 3 types of harmful emissions. It's one cat.

Two cats.

A primary cat which heats up immediately to reduce emissions on cold starts. (Far left of picture in exhaust tunnel)

And a secondary cat. (just before flange, shaped like a triangle.)

I stand corrected. If you replace the downpipe both cats come off with it just like if it had only one.

I know this is an old thread but my question is the stock down pipe 3"? Is the main difference with an aftermarket down pipe better flow with one or no cat?

The main difference is going to be in your catalytic converter, the spun metal ones typically flow better, you also won't have the reduction in size where the 2nd o2 sensor goes. There's a nice flat spot on the stock one.

There is a sticky post up at the top of this forum. It will show you pictures of the OEM pipe and aftermarket alternatives if you're interested in knowing more about upgrades.
