k04 rebuild kit?

Went on a long road trip the other day and started getting some bad turbo whine. Sounds like my turbo is going out. Its much more than the normal whine/whistle. It sounds like a sequential gear box almost, like an aircraft turbine spooling down. Its loud enough to hear over music. I've been running a 23 psi tune for a while and its at 53k mi.

My question - who sells a rebuild kit for these things? I searched the forums and searched google and couldn't find one? The only thing I could find were rebuild kits for VW family k04 cars.

I'd rather rebuild it myself and spend 100$ instead of dropping $600 for another one.

I was under the impression there were 6-7 varieties of k04 turbo, and that the audi/VW ones are different than the k04 on our cars.

This. Riceburner is selling one for like 200 bucks. Id rather pay that then mess with one using VW parts. I bet there is an OEM rebuild kit that costs doube a used one.

OP. The most commonly used k04 rebuild kit is known as the ZFR and ZZP sells it.

Yea I sold mine for 200, if the turbos out and you have money you might as well upgrade imo since we do have a couple bolt on options.

Yea but how much life would be left on a used k04?

OP I recommend this (zzp has some good prices, pwerks might too), its not just a couple bolts and some bearings the fall into the perfect place.

Thanks for the advice. After thinking about it and reading what you guys are saying it looks like the best idea will be to just buy another k04 or zfr. I'm not trying to push more power out of it as its just my DD (need to keep it reasonably reliable).

If you're going to buy an upgraded turbo and want it to still be dd'able look at pwerks WR1 (KO4+) turbo I have that and it still drives great for a DD and is as powerful on pump as a e85 KO4
