I saw the thread about this being a common problem, but in that thread he says there is an O ring for the HPFP. or at least thats how I read it. well my cobalt started leaking oil probably 2 days ago and I just noticed it got low. Found out it was the HPFP.

I just want to make sure there is no Oring besides the gasket that mates the HPFP To the block, cause I sure cant find one

 

I thought it was a cam cap seal?

EDIT: There's a PIP from GM about it and a TSB.

Condition/Concern:


A technician may comment of an oil leak in the high pressure fuel pump area.

Recommendation/Instructions:


Engineering has determined that an oil leak in this area is most likely coming from the #6 intake cam cap at the high pressure fuel pump. To repair this concern the technician should reseal the cam cap. Follow eSI procedure under "Engine | Engine Mechanical - 2.0L | Repair Instructions - On Vehicle | Intake Camshaft and Valve Lifter Replacement " for repair instructions and specific locations to apply sealer for the #6 cap.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Condition


Some customers may comment on an oil leak.

Upon further investigation, a technician may find oil leaking from the high pressure fuel pump area.

Cause


This condition may be caused by a camshaft cap that is not sealed correctly to the cylinder head, causing oil to leak out.

when did gm put this out?

 

Like 3 years ago... It's a TSB, not a recall so you would not have received any documentation from GM regarding it.

 

There is one for the high pressure fuel pump too. I just finished repairing it

 

wonder if i can still can get this done...

 

Another thing that I would recommend while your doing this. When taking the HPFP housing off you will see that the silicon sealant that GM had applied during production of these engines on the housing is laughable and explains some oil leakage. Here is a picture:



You can see on this pic how with the little silicon that was applied from the factory where the oil was leaking through.




This was after we had coated it with a sufficient amount silicon sealant

So upon getting the Gasket for the HPFP and the Oring for the cap i would apply the silicon sealant on the housing as per the pictures. I did this and I haven't had a problem since.

Looks like so far I stopped the leak. I left the car for 12 hours to fully cure the RTV and put a cardboard piece under my car to see if it leaked. It hasn't had 1 drop so far.

Glad this didnt happen when I was getting tuned, my oil was low so it had to have been doing it for awhile

 

Bump, still having an issue. I've sealed the HPFP/Camshaft endplate and Camshaft Sensor with Three Bond and its still leaking. I'm at my wits end with this and am thinking about taking it to the dealership

 

I just had this fixed on my car under warrenty. It was leaking from where there piston from the hpfp goes into the valve cover. That's what the tech said anyways.

 

FYI, this is an important leak to fix. If you don't fix it, it will eventually work it's way into the clutch area, which will shorten the life of the clutch for sure.

 

i can see that happening, my car is only at 32000kms, and there was oil freaking EVERYWHERE. im not sure how long it has been leaking for tho.

 

Leak is for sure fixed this time, no oil leak in 2 days of driving. The problem was....Oil filter cap.

btw..i feel stupid for this but it helps to put an O ring in your oil filter cap when you change your oil

 

Hate to bring this from the dead, but is there anything that I need to know about removing the HPFP? I need to replace the sensor under neith it and its really in the way...Thanks in advance

 

Not really. Remove the two bolts holding the HPFP in and the fuel lines that go into it. IIRC a 17mm wrench works. Then take it off and put it somewhere safe. Also, make sure to have your fuel pump fuse taken out and you start the car to remove any excess fuel so you dont get fuel everywhere but some will leak out. I just put a towel under it.

 

I just replaced my hpfp yesterday and it was pretty easy to remove as long as you can get your hands in there to remove the black plate in front of it.. Mine was leaking all over the place, but i didnt notice it was coming from the housing like 40rty was. Damn, now im gonna wonder if i need to reseal it as well.

My car had a leak that was puddling up under the HPFP too, I thought for sure it was this problem, but mine was my rear main seal. Got it replaced under warranty and hasn't leaked a drop since haha.

No idea, started leaking oil not long after I bought the car and I just kept putting oil in it for a few weeks then I took it to the dealer and they said that was my problem, no leak since.

 

Back from the dead. So I just finished fixing this annoying leak and was wondering if any of you actually replaced the fuel line? The thing is 50 bucks so I contemplating whether or not run the risk of my car setting ablaze. I also noticed that the fuel feed line also says it needs to be replaced after its been removed. Part number 12636128

Check the how to on this, don't just replace gaskets, it will leak again. In fact for the cam cover u don't even use a gasket to do it right. Fill the gasket grove with rtv, squish it in there good then put another bead on top of that, won't ever leak again

 

I didn't replace the fuel line, I wouldn't remove it a bunch of times without replacing it though. A couple times should be ok.

 

I reused the cam end plate gasket and just put rtv around it. So far so good.
