my clutch slip story

So i thought i would share my clutch slip issues. About six mouth ago i started getting clutch slip. It started out in 3rd and 4th gear, if i went over about 10 psi of boost it would slip. Over the next six mouths it got much worse to the point where i was slipping every time i shifted in any gear at almost any rpm. I bought a KY stg3 clutch and a new flywheel. I put the new clutch and flywheel in with the help of some friends. When we pulled out the stock clutch it looked fine, i was very surprised by this, for the amount of slip i had, i thought for sure the clutch was going to be fried, but it looked pretty good. This immediately set off a red flag in my head that something else is going on. We put in the new clutch and finished the job. The first two day after putting in the clutch the car felt good, the slip was gone so i thought maybe it was fixed. On the 3rd day as i was driving home from work the slip came back on the new clutch, it was slipping just like the old clutch in any gear at any rpm . At this point i was pissed. The next day i went over to my buddy's shop and got on Alldata and started reading all the TSB's on the tranny and clutch. I came across a TBS for doing a clutch relearn if you throw a certain code, i had not thrown any codes but thought lets try this clutch relearn and see what happens. So i hooked up my buddy's tech2 and did the clutch relearn, it took about 5 minute to complete the relearn. I took the car out after doing the relearn and it was like brand new, the clutch felt like it did when i first got the car, it's been a few days and everything is fine. So all i can say is CHECK THE BASICS, if i had gone on alldata first i would have saved time and cash.

What does the relearn do exactly? Any idea?

My stock clutch slipped when I had a 25psi tuned on top of gms1 I think because of the quick spool/spike. So I when back to gms1 tuned for other reasons and the clutch was a ok again fwiw.

just holding down the clutch pedal and releasing it as prompted by the tech2.

Not to sure what it did, my guess is that did something with the clutch position sensor and the ecm.

You performed a clutch pedal position sensor learn.

Basically relearning the min and max of the clutch pedal. The only way that procedure would have any affect on your clutch slippage would be if the ECM adjusts timing and the wastegate based on clutch position.

If it worked though, it worked. May do it to my car tomorrow.

yeah like i said my clutch looked fine when i pulled it out, i think maybe the ecm didn't know where the clutch pedal position was, and that gave me what felt like clutch slip, everytime i would shift the rpm would hang for a second.

Lightbulb Interesting !

How many miles did you have when the clutch was slipping ? I was at 26K, and got some symptoms, but the "shift at 3K" method ( as per this posting in Drivetrain )
solved my issues.

I assume that a Tech 2 is required to do this relearn ? It would be really neat if there was a back yard cheat method to accomplish the same thing.

damn, so you just plug in the tech tool and run a program to learn the clutch postion?
can you do this under hp tuners i wonder?
interesting, i may have to try this because i was thinking my clutch position switch/sensor was bad, but this may fix things. I was thinking it was bad because the car does not decelerate very good at all, it stays in higher rpms and just stays there with no gas.

Could you explain what you mean when you say: "Shift at 3K" Method?

no just doing 500 miles of easy driving no more than half throttle, and my drive to work is both hwy and streets.

I'm at 22k now, i would say around 18k is when the slipping started.

Shift higher then normal as stated it's good advice. I have 75k on my SS/TC and clutch has no slip.

I wonder if this option is available for SS S/C. Makes me wonder if it would help with the rev-hang between shifts...
