Never put regular oil in your cobalt.
I have a cobalt with the 2.0 liter ecotec engine. After like 30K miles of getting broken in, it got like 30 MPG. Then this dealership that I've taken this car to before decided to put regular oil during the oil change without telling me. Like a fool, I drove like 5K miles or so without replacing the oil. I was getting like 26-27 MPGs. Now not only did I put synthetic oil in the ecotec but I paid all this money for the stage 1 upgrade which is supposed to raise fuel economy by 1-2 MPGs and all but I am still only getting 26-27 MPGs. Granted I have a 5 mile commute to work and I let the car warm up for a couple minutes in the winter but it should still be better than this. How long am I going to have to put up with this terrible fuel economy?
I know it doesn't matter but you pay this money for an economy car you want at least 30 MPGs for bragging rights.

1. Who said the stage kit increases fuel economy?
2. If that's average mpg, then you are normal in the winter. Hell I don't get that in my LNF.
3. I doubt conventional does much for one oil change.
Chill out and change your oil and report back your mpg

who ever told you that putting the stage 1 kit on would get you better fuel mileage?
beyond that, you do know that cars get significantly less fuel mileage in the winter right?
Running regular oil in your car for only 5k miles probably did no permanent damage to the engine.

OP need to do some learning about cars.
30mpg HIGHWAY it's rated for. Not idling your car for 5 minutes than driving 5 minutes to work. You're barely letting it get up to temp. This is actually the worst thing you've done to your car. You're doing this twice a day at least? This is causing most of the wear on your engine.

nothing wrong with ur gas mileage, especially in winter. and here is a little advice, don't take ur car to a dealer to change ur oil, if u wanna know its done right every time, do it your self
The dealer wanted to void my warranty because the Cobalt SS don't come with turbo's only superchargers. After the "Tech" told me that, I told him not to work on my car and I want it out of there. He asked me why and said don't worry I won't void the warranty just letting you know. I told him, you can't void my warranty even if you tried ******* this car is stock from factory.
Dealerships don't know ****, mother ****** told me they don't come with turbos. I laughed in his face and told him to **** off.

As everyone else said, and regular oil now a days from the dealer is going to be gm dex-os. If you are driving for 5k miles an oil change and 5 days a week start the car and let it warm up for 5 and drive for 5 and shut it off your causing way more damage then the dealer did from the oil change. You should also change the oil more often then 5k with that driving habit.
Hmmm...have you checked the flux capacitor and made sure that conventional oil hasn't mixed with the plutonium? Because that'll seriously affect gas mileage when trying to reach 83mph...

The septilodium protectors will wear out the glendometric shaft walls with regular oil. Dont be alarmed though; the process can be reversed as long as you properly flip the rendoration columns 360 degrees
Are you nuckin futs?! Clocking it 360* will cause a massive leak in the plutonium decombobulator that has already been damaged by that regular oil! You're just giving the mad scientist more work after the welds to the manifold blow!
I heard OP was parting out his car because of getting less than 30 mpg. I call the bumper and the antennae
I got 30 MPG last year. yeah, i'm joking around about the stage 1 kit being a fuel economy upgrade but it is supposed to improve highway mpg. Right after the oil change the fuel economy dropped. When i switched back to synthetic it stayed low. It took about 30K for me to start getting 30 MPGs. I understand that cars get less in winter time but that's what it was getting last year.
22 city is well underrated.

I'm half joking around because it's fun to talk about the cobalt's strengths as an economy car but I honestly am pissed off too. Because I go to this dealer, get synthetic every time, have a history of it, no one in their right mind ever put regular oil in the cobalt, and then these ******* did it without asking me. It took a long time to get up to 30 mpg and i don't know how long i'll have to drive to get it back there. and i was getting 27mpg before winter too. **** princeton chevrolet.
Honestly I think at least some of you people modified the vehicle before it broke in so you don't know what I'm talking about... i've seen other people claim 30 mpgs here too... i got it but after 30K...
And yeah, you are supposed to get 1 or 2 mpg better on highway with stage one. you can read up on it at this site.
You don't get good gas mileage, the other dude has a point. I want the other dude to have no points but think he has all the points...

look, i don't expect the fuel economy to go up that much but you can read about it on this site regarding the performance upgrades, and even from users that ***only*** have that upgrade, that the fuel economy goes up with just that upgrade... the thing is i posted this message in the wrong section where people are driving heavily modified vehicles so they can't see my point. really how many people here drove the vehicle like 35K miles without mods to see what kind of fuel economy the engine ends up getting with some experience behind it... there is a thread on this very forum probably stickied at the top talking about various reprogramming upgrades and that was the strength of stage 1, an insignificant fuel economy upgrade...
No way not even day one does an unmodified cobalt with 2.0L ecotec get 22 MPG only real world in the city. Not even day one. that's not a practical number compared to what you're really going to get.
i think the humor is lost on this website... if i was talking about the 2009 cobalt with 2.0L ecotec anywhere else in this manner, it would be funny... it changes when i talk this way with people that are familiar with the vehicle.

if 22 mpg city is not underrated how come even in hardcore performance testing in the magazines was the cobalt getting like 26 MPGs. What would you have to do to consistently get 22 MPGs? The mpgs have never fallen that low in my unmodified cobalt, not even in traffic jams. wrong section. you people may have a great performance car with all those mods but unmodified it was a reasonable economy car too.
i did not post this fuel economy complaint in the performance section intentionally but i think it is appropriate.
any suggestions on how to improve my engine's fuel economy performance? I think the cobalt's upgrade comes with better sensors so the engine can run thinner maybe. i could say better torque curve but I think it only has a better torque curve if you use it. no, i did not get the stage 1 fuel economy upgrade for better fuel economy but i wouldn't have wanted it if it ruined fuel economy or the life of the engine, voided the warranty, etc. it is supposed to be a plus though.
the environment is important though. tell me how i can help. i dont want to be that loser pulling up in the economy car getting less than 30 mpgs and having prius owners calling me ninny and stuff... let me know what i can do to save my rep.
