New turbo on LHU, which one to choose

I'm putting a new turbo on my car since i'm swapping the engine and I was wondering what turbo can I take if I want to stay below 400 whp but be better than the stock K04? I was looking for the K04R updrage but heard that turbo wasn't lasting very well, maybe a year or 2.

What bolt-on turbo can fit on the LHU without having to upgrade the pistons/rods, I just want to have a little more fun with it.

Turbah

Idk by experience, but ive been looking at the BNR GT2860 upgrade if anything at all. Supposed to be completely bolt on since it still uses the stock frame. I think it's like $800 + core?

ZFR. Keep the boost low, and turn it up when you get bored.

Here's a link to the website: https://bnrsupercars.wordpress.com/mazdaspeed-3-6-cx-7/ . It's for the k04 from a ms3/ms6, but he offers the same service for our turbo. I was reading a couple threads on the solstice/hhr ss forums and I saw couple guys make upper 300's to the wheels with it. I imagine with E you could go higher than that. I've just seen a few of the z54 peeps having trouble with blown turbos and that worried me especially since ZZP was giving them trouble about warranties, but those could be random cases so who knows.

I checked on their website for the one for our cars and they are asking 1100 usd plus core and shipping for a GT2871, kinda expensive for what I really need

Yeah and for that one you need a BOV too. That's a bigger version of what I was referring to. I'd email them and get specs and prices to verify if you want to go that route since it's not on their website. Regardless the z54 is $1200 anyway haha

Agreed, get ZFR and keep the torque low until the upper RPM range via tune. You should be fine.

The smaller bnr turbo is a lot like the Ko4r size-wise. The 2871 is a good durable turbo but as others have said you will have to run a bov. Only thing truly Bolton that is capable of 400whp on gas is a z54 or a zfr. Zfr is a lot better but twice the price. Boost ramp it and you will be fine along with the trans.

I have a ZFR and I’m in love with it. Nothing beats the feeling of a tuned lnf with a Zfr at wide open throttle. Except prolly a vette.

the zfr is a zzp turbo. essentially they buy an efr turbo from borg warner without the turbine housing, and they use a turbine housing they made specifically to fit the application. they also weld the extension to the compressor cover.

Performance Autowerks sells the WR-2/3/4, cost a little more but still direct bolt in EFR turbo.

If I remember correctly the 2 is a 6258 and the 3 is the 6758.

They have for quite some time, but it's not on the Cobalt page. If you go to the Solstice/Sky section it'll be there, and it has options to be configured for a Delta instead.

What are you thinking about that? Might be a good option tho. It's 1600 USD for the kit.
