Oil loss after ZFR swap

Well over the weekend I noticed blue smoke coming out of my tailpipe.. Not much just a little here and there while cruising not much while at idle. So my buddy and I did a compression test and it came out fine. 170/165/164/160. Then I checked the oil level and I was bone dry!! Luckily the motor didn't seize on my 8hr trip. We then put oil and saw / heard nothing out of the ordinary. I gave it a few quick revs smoke did come out of the tailpipe, no oil on the intake and Chargepipes so I'm baffled on what it could be. What do you guys think it could be? Any info is appreciated

Upon doing the swap, did you ever put oil back in?

Sounds like your oil seals are toast on your ZFR. if its burning that much oil and you can rule out any other oil loss by Piston rings, which you did a compression test so that rules that out and no oil in your intake/charge pipes means its going only 1 place.

I'll check for shaft play when I get home.. At least I still have warranty on the ZFR, I've only had it for about a month. I'll swap out to the stock turbo and see if that smokes and if it does then I'm screwed!

It does sound like the seals are bad on the turbo but just wanted to add that a warm and wet cylinder will give an inflated # with a compression test. Let the car sit for a few hours and run the test dry to eliminate that possibility if you haven't already.

We did that. Car sat for about two hours before we did the compression test.. On a side note the turbo has no shaft play. My buddy checked it out for me

Could there be some kinda blockage on a hose like breather or even oil line causing oil to be pushing though the seals? Seen that happen.

Exactly. Look at your lines.

If I were you, I'd go play the lottery if your motor was bone dry and it still runs...

Happened to me when I had mine put on, the oil return line was leaking where it mated to the turbo. I wasn't seeing smoke tho

Well idk if it was bone dry but when we checked the dipstick it had just a small amount on it. Good thing is my buddy got the turbo off. Is their any way to check if the seals are bad or would I have to send it to ZZP?

If there was a little bit on the dipstick it wasn't bone dry yet. Ur oil light would have come on if it was bone dry. No oil no oil pressure, so oil light.

This, I had to put a new gasket and keep tightening it occasionally, some with the coolant lines.

Lmao. 9/10 have a problem and usually its user error. The ratio of LNFs with a zfr to pretty much any other turbo is quite huge. Only reason why you hear anything about problems.

truth^^ ive tried explaining that to a lot of people before. the reason people hear more "complaints" about zzp or the zfr is because they sell THOUSANDS of things compared to a 100 or so things from any where else. like the zfr to the 20g........so many more zfr's than 20gs i would bet. but i guess people dont grasp that concept lol. definitely user error though, at least 95% of the time id say lol. i installed mine, primed it, drove it untuned for about 700 miles to zzp and ever since it got tuned ive beat the **** out of it.......10k miles later and still no issues lol.

Only issue I had with the turbo was the turbo to dp gasket overheating and shredding to pieces.
