over rev questions

Yeah, i must be dumb or something, but the other night i was at redline in 3rd and did a NLS to 4th and somehow hit 2nd gear. the tires were squealing and it backfired and was louder than hell but seems fine. is there anything you guys think i should be concerned with besides learning how to up shift? I figure it put me around 9400rpm for about 1 second or so..

Nice shift! LOL it happened to me but I think the ECU cuts spark if this happenes because when I did it it redlined then like the engine shut off for a second lol. Any CELs? If not what can you do?

no CELS,. no odd vibrations or noises since, but it sure got me paranoid. I keep thinking i'm gonna go startup my car and it's gonna shut right off or something... like a spun bearing or bent valve. i guess this is some proof that these engines are pretty good if they can handle 9400 rpms.. lol

sounds like nothing got hurt, you have to be careful of that you can float the valves and do a lot of damage... i've even heard of cranks breaking. just hear say on the crank so i'm not going to say thats true or not.

it happens to everyone at least once.

well, i've put on about 500 miles since and it still seems alright, so time will tell. I'm interested if anyone else has done this and what damage it did/didn't do.

if you put 500 miles since then and haven't noticed anything, then you're fine. if something gave during that incident, you'd know it by now.

It shouldn't be anything to worry about, we all miss shifts at some point.
Just be glad this didn't happen...

Yup you're fine if 500 miles have gone by and you haven't noticed anything odd.

I did the exact same thing in my old G5 GT and felt like a huge tool for doing so...I'm still baffled that I was even able to get it into 2nd gear so easily. My RPM's tanked to the end of the gauge for a split second before I pulled it out of gear.

I immediately heard a noise that sounded lifter related (reminded me of the lifter tick in my old 4G63 GSX), I annihilated 3 exhaust side lifters. It was all replaced under warranty though and the car was fine after the repair.

The electronics in the computer can shut off fuel and spark but that does nothing for mechanically spinning the engine up that high because of the gear ratio in the transaxle. The computer has no way to disconnect or override the clutch connection between engine and trans.

Most common failure points in modern DOHC in-line fours when this happens can range from valvetrain issues (rocker/followers to valves floating and hitting pistons in interference engines), timing belt/chain slipping due to tensioner issues, to bearing damage and pistons and/or rods coming apart due to stretching. Some clutches, especially heavier stock dual-mass flywheel setups and other aftermarket setups have also been know to come apart when severely over-revved. If a car continues to run fine afterwards nothing may have immediately broke but I'd be very careful about modifying the car as that doesn't guarantee something wasn't weakened and may not last as long or take to higher stress levels.

Dam that sucks. I did the same thing to my car the first time I got on it. I wasnt redlining 3rd though but I went into 2nd and the tires squealed like hell. I didnt let the clutch out all the way though so I think it only went to like 7800, but I have a 2.2. Its been an oil change since and nothing is wrong. However it scared the **** out of me and I didnt try driving that hard for like 2 weeks.

you were driving...then whatever is the issue at hand, happened. Why do they need more than that? You only give them a basic, I'm stupid and don't know answer, and don't act shady or suspicious and they won't ask questions.

I told them the truth...just omitted the part where I hit the limiter. Told them I was pulling onto the highway and (hit the limiter) and then went for 3rd and it wasn't there. Tried 4th and it wasn't there. It just spun like it was in neutral. Pulled over and shut it off. That's all I ever told them. They put up a fight but ended up fixing it. I didn't over rev like youre talking about, just bounced it off the limiter. I still have a sneaking suspision that my timing chain tensioner malfunctioned(past ecotechs have been plagued by that). Whatever the cause, they replaced most of the top end under warranty.

This. If you act like your car IQ is 0 you're much less suspicious than a car guy.
