Reliabilty?

I am looking to buy a 08 or 09 cobalt... but most of the ones i find, are driven by kids less than 20 years old... i assume these cars are being beat up when they drive it... how long does the LNF engine last? and how reliable is it? if kids are beating the crap out of it, how long can it last?

I'd say they're pretty reliable, although I have an LSJ, which I would assume to be less relaible technically with the heating issues they have, but I run my car pretty hard, track whenever I can, and I deliver pizza in it around 5 days a week, and all thats happened in around a year was a broken axle which was more my fault then the cars

Mine only has 15k miles and its stored in the winter. But those 15k miles were hard and raced. Car has held up fantastic. The engine itself is pretty stout its the clutch and trans you should worry about I suppose. Hmm if it hasn't been tuned then you are even safer. Lots of idiots over boost and blow crap up.

Want a LNF engine not abused, buy a HHR SS or Solstice/Sky, most of us are 30+ and take car of our cars even modded.

yupp. but most of the skys and soltices are out of my budget, or not what i am looking for. i have a 500+ hp mustang, but its for straight lines only. :'( the fact that the cobalt's suspension was tuned on nurburing really bought me into getting this car

The HHR SS was also YouTube - Chevy/Heinricy at Nürburgring

But for a serious driver I agree, the Cobalt ss/tc would be the better choice for road type coarse events.

Its warrantied till 100K or 5yrs, so in reality, as long as its stock, drives well, good deal...buy it. Even an "adult" can beat the **** out of it. You'd be surprised, some of us young bucks actually take car of our cars...

Very bad rap you old people give young people. Just saying.

Of course you will have the minority of young guys who take of there car, but trust me if it was a normal thing your insurance wouldn't be so high.
I'm sure they keep better statistics on this kind of stuff then you or I, thus why you guys pay out the butt and its not because your age bracket makes alot of money either.
Heck I could drive a Corvette Z06 and have cheaper insurance then a 20 year old with a Cobalt LT.

Yeah, overall statistics, i can agree, however, we are a higher risk sheerly based on not having as much experience, more tendency to drive reckless, lesser driving history and add that to a powerful car = high rates. However, so many other factors go into the bullshit that is insurance. I feel old ******* deserve high rates w/ how they drive around here.

I pay 83 dollars a month, full coverage. Granted i hit the magical "25"

If this is still a concern of yours, then i'd suggest maybe finding a more mature audienced car. Im not trying to be a dick, just throwing out the realities. Find a dealer that perhaps has a left over?? Cruise our classifieds?? quite a few in there.

Some younger peps over the age of 18 may pay for out of thier pockets, but its under there parents policy.

They don't hold there own policy.

Also anything that is on your insurance makes prices go higher, doesn't matter if its your fault or not.

lmao. I'm 21 with my own policy and I've totaled a new car and I've had several speeding tickets. Still only 140 a month. Good luck I suppose, but then again I have USAA.

thats crazy.

but i have given a call to someone regarding there SS. 10,000 dollars cash for it, carfax says its clean, 30,000 miles on it, but he is not even 20 years old yet. 10,000 dollars is very cheap. im thinking the only reason why, is because there is something wrong with it, even though he claims there isnt

also, most of the SS's i see, have been for sale for a long time. why is that? no demand for an SS?

Honestly it is hard for everyone to just guess about a car we haven't seen. But for 10,000 I would get it even if you had to rebuild the motor. You could almost buy it have a motor put in it and sell it for more than you had invested. The trans is the weak spot on these things. That sounds like too good of a deal to pass up to me, even if there is something wrong, just as long as you know what it is.

As far as SS balts not selling... look at the economy, that is most likely the culprit. People don't need a performance car if they cant afford their house. hell what it is now almost 25% of the population is under-employed. That is huge.

yes, but im sure there are some problems with it. its a 08. the kid has told me he races it. its not leaking or anything. i gave it a quick glance at it. it looks good. but for 10,000 there has to be a catch...

but back to original question, i dont care about price. i just dont want to buy someone elses problem. lets assume he dogged the engine, always being redlined, not shifted very well. how reliable is this power train? how could this car go wrong, what are some things i should look for?

There's your catch. It's been beaten. Who knows what kind of internal damage there is that could come back to bite you 80,000 miles down the road. No one has pushed these past 80,000 miles as far as I've seen, so the reliability is still unknown. So far, all of the higher mileage ss/tcs that have been maintained properly have been holding together well.
