Replacing water pump?

So, I've got some cam chain noise starting in my car, a little over 150k miles on it and I'm about 100% sure it's never been touched. I figure while I'm in there I'll toss in a new water pump, thinking it's easiest while I'm already there.

So, I gotta ask...

What in the holy **** is going on with this water pump setup? Is it chain driven from somewhere else? I've done a quick search and I can't really figure out what the hell is going on here.

It's driven off the balance shaft chain, tons of info around if you search a little...

There's no reason to change it if it's good, they rarely go bad.

Just buy the ACDelco timing kit and have it changed. Don't worry about the water pump.

rarely the water pump goes bad. However the water pump housing seal usually leaks. I've had a couple ecotecs that leaked there.

my 08 ss leaks when under load but not at idling do you think its the housing? figuired it was the waterpump gasket or headgasket.

Probably the gasket. its not difficult to replace, but you need a special "tool" to hold the waterpump sprocket or you get this annoying whine.

Waterpump

I just replaced my waterpump due to a leak. I also replaced my turbo core and thermostat. I tried to start up and my car run like **** and is in limp mode. Did my timing tool fail and lost timing? Or is there any other option. Rpm bounce around from 400 to 2000 to keep it running. It is a 2008 lnf. If it is timing how hard is it to retime?
