Rumbling during NLS?
Hey guys,
I went to the track today and decided to NLS from second to third. My car like started to vibrate. It was weird. This is the second time this has happened. Any ideas what it is?
It feels like it's stalling a bit.
I assumed its a slipping stock clutch, but I don't know if it vibrates or rumbles the car.
Or is it something more serious.
Any insight to this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.

not farts.... i dont know what you've been eating, Im sure it was more like a series of pops.
If the clutch slips the car doesnt vibrate, just the rpms shoot up and the car is going nowhere. You might have been experiencing wheel hop? like a studder?

It's definately not wheel hop, it sounds internal like weird. Almost resembles a cold start where the cam phasers make that weird noise during a start up for a few seconds.
You, my friend, are experiencing massive misfires. Mostly from doing the NLS wrong. Are you doing it when at full operating temp? I know when you do it when the engine is to cold, it will backfire and misfire like a son of a bitch.
Next time you feel that, GET OUT OF THE THROTTLE! You can cause damage to the engine. The flashing check engine light is the misfires. In that event, coast to a stop and shut the car off. Wait a few, and then start it back up. Drive easy for a while.
If it's vibrating and causing a shudder, it's pretty bad.

Second time was at the track yesterday, it was my 3rd run when I felt it. Probably up to temp.
Third time- Not exactly sure how up to temp I was this morning, first time it's ever flashed the check engine light at me. I didn't pull over I kept driving to work. Even got off the exit ramp of the highway kind of hard :\
Well screw no lift shift, it's not for a crappy driver like me *sigh*
Well what can I do to check if my engine is messed up or to ensure a healthy engine after this mishap. Change the oil, spark plugs?
Just get rid of the cobalt and get something more to your skill level.... Like a Dodge Aries.
Seriously, you have a new problem thread posted every day. You screw something up every week. This car, and possibly the act of driving, are obviously too much for you. Do yourself, and everyone here, a favor. Ride a bicycle!

But we all start somewhere. This is my first "fast" fwd car. I had a 1994 LSVTEC that I paid people to work on. This is the first car I messed with myself. First high HP car and first time drag racing. Yes I make noob mistakes and yes they may be obvious to some of you but I do learn from them and I improve over time. Irlts a work in progress. am I ashamed? disappointed hell yes I am, but I keep at it.
hmmm.... NLS'n never worked for me...
Whenever I'd hit the clutch(pre-tune) the RPMs would jus shoot up and it would refuse to go to any gear(2-3, 3-4 watever..) After Tune, it worked... but It popped an it sounded like I broke somethin almost
... so I don't do it anymore

Seriously lol.

But, learning like this on a new car that is a lot more advanced than you're use to is your downfall... But if you can afford to make the mistakes and fix what breaks then more power to you. I learned how to drive stick on an 85 Subaru and my first racing experiences with Auto-X and drag were a 1990 Celica ST... pretty cheap and basic cars to learn on. I owned and raced 2 automatic Z34's as well which were more powerful. A 1988 Mercury Cougar XR-7 was my first car and my first rwd experience. Then upgraded to a Porsche 944 and then a 2004 GTO. A couple other cars in-between... BUT, can you see where I'm getting at? Since you are learning on this car and it's all you got, then so be it. We all have to learn at some point and you just happen to jump into a high HP FWD car.
But I digress...
Start with checking your spark plugs to see if any are damaged or fouled.
A good NLS should make the shift feel seamless. The boost will not drop, or will only drop a tiny amount, there may be one pop from the exhaust as the unburnt fuel hits the hot parts of the exhaust.
I have done bad NLSs and good ones I know the difference
If you are tuned I do not recommend 1-2 NLS. I also don't recommend it all the time. I only do it every once an a while.
NLS is not for down shifting. NLS is designed to keep the boost up so when you go to the next gear yo don't have turbo lag.

Trick is to start NLS'ing right as the tach is coming up to redline. There is a slight lag in actual RPM vs. what the tach is saying. You want to get it right at 6k. You have to be fast.

yeah i have had the rumble happen when i missed a NLS it was from the misfire it was like you could feel the flames coming out of the back of the car looked cool on flim but not good for the car
You have to shift sooner with NLS, it's designed to work around 6300 and the tach lags like hell as well. You are likely hitting the rev limiter as you are NLS'ing which will cause that rapid fire sound. Try it earlier!
When my car was stock i would do the 1-2 shift at 5800rpm and the 2-3 and 3-4 close to 6000rpm.
With a tune the car would misfire everytime i got near redline. A change to a colder plug gapped tighter solved everything.

hmmm... im tuned, at bout 24 psi, what kinda plugs you runnin? people always talk about stock plugs are the best for stock SS/TC's.. but i can never get a good answer about spark plugs for tuned ones

My first car (before this cobalt) was a 2000 hyundai tiburon. I did some pretty ghetto stuff to it and learned from my mistakes. Learning how to drive this car is only going to happen if you own it...
Just keep practicing the NLS. I definately wouldnt do the NLS if your tuned though. I've personally been staying away from it since I got tuned.
