Saw something weird on the RPD today...

I usually have it with coolant/inlet/FP for the secondary set of gauges but today switched to the gear/shift light setup instead.

After doing so, I did a heavy accel in 5th to get around a car on the highway and when I did, I notice the gear selector dropped to 4th while I accel'd hard. It then went back to 5th when I eased off the pedal LOL!!! I did it a couple times to be sure I was seeing what I was seeing, sure enough it did it every time!!

Has anyone else seen this? Please try it if not, curious to see if this is common. Not sure what it would hurt or change, but Im curious if anyone else has this. Maybe a glitch with the HPT beta??

Thanks

Edit: A vid:

Mine will occasionally say that I'm in 3rd, when I already shift to 4th or 5th. It will catch up later. I also noticed that when you come to a stop it says you are in neutral (doesn't matter if the clutch is in & you are in gear).

But other wise, I think it's pretty neat!

Pretty sure its because there is no actual gear sensor for each gear. Its all calculated off of other variables. Don't know exactly which ones but it makes sense that way.

Maybe air load vs rpm vs speed vs the square root of pi

Then how would it know you changed gears? Why does the VCM have settings for each gear then also? That doesnt make sense, Im sorry.

And it doesnt do this with other gears, only 5th Im finding. If I start at 2500 in 4th and go WOT, it says 4th the whole time.

just being an ass. I would never use "yo" like that and take myself seriously. But it could be a clutch

Yes, my clutch does slip. It didnt when this happened tho.

all good SS, I took it as a joke eventho its actually a thought if it does base off calculations and not a gear selection sensor.

The VCM may have gear settings, but that doesn't mean there is a sensor for each one. Don't get me wrong, I don't fully understand it either, but thats one thing I'm certain of.

it wont even show the gear until clutch is released......

is wierd in that screen i cannot figure out the wierd stuff it does,

if you take the time and get the NLS down you can set the shift lights up perfect so as soon as the red arrow pops up or depending how fast you react you go NLS

ive got 3rd setup perfect, but its only useful at the strip.....keeps you not focusing on your tach

The ecm probably calculate the ''actual'' gear using rpm and speed. If your clutch is slipping, rpm are higher than supposed and the ecm think that you are in 4th instead of 5th gear. I know some automatic transmission will compare input an output rpm of the transmission to determine which gear it's in. It makes much more sense than using airload / rpm / whatever to calculate it.

Mine doesnt show the next gear until you press the gas again. I did this a bunch of times this morning to confirm that.

Damn!!! That **** is crazy! Thanks for posting up that video. WOW! But my guess is that the car thinks it's in 4th gear because of all that power in 5th.

Someone said it above and it must be something like they say. Some sort of formula included Speed and RPM to calculate the gear it is in. Because the RPM rises a bit while the speed barely changes.

I think it is telling you to shift down into 4th, would be my guess. I don't think going full throttle in 5th is such a smart thing to do first of all.

Im not going WOT in 5th....and my car is tuned and tuned for anything I throw at it But glad you're concerned...

And if it's telling me to downshift, why does it only do it in 5th?

Do you have a aftermarket clutch? Maybe it is telling you to down shift in 5th because it is not meant to go such high boost at such a low rpm for that gear ratio.

I don't have an rpd obviously, but from what I have been told it can read a BUNCH of **** so you never know.
