Subaru Mod help!
yea usually you get that sound because you have low pressure usually like a hollow sound were the pressure is escaping. there have been many people that have dropped cylinders which means pressure lose and creating the hollow sound.
I've had it twice.. broken valve lash adjusters.. U can go over my posts if you like.. long story short.. Gm fixed it the first time, I think either not correctly or there was more damage than they saw and it re-occurred less than 2 months later. I'm still in the process of getting the car fixed(waiting on head gasket kit) to put a brand new ported head with cams and heavier valve springs on from ZZP.
Generally, this is caused from over-revving the engine, and 6700 would do it, especially with a NLS. I was at the stock rev limit and it went by going into the wrong gear(lower)on the highway one day. Been a headache ever since, so I'm doing it right all the way now. No more warranty for me. Most likely it'll be the exhaust side valve lash adjuster that's fried, and it's possible to have a rocker or 2 laying around in the head too. Good luck getting any Gm mechanic to actually look at it since they think you're smoking crack. Best to take off the valve cover and inspect/repair it yourself. Had nothin but troubles getting Gm mechanics to listen to anything I'd say, except one of course and I thank that man for actually doing as I requested, even though I no longer have a warranty per se. I went to half a dozen dealerships at least.... just a headsup on that. Good luck

good thing warranty is gonna cover it
i knew you would find the answer to whatever was wrong under the valve cover...the subaru noise always seems to mean broken adjusters and doesn't have any driveability symptoms except the noise
I really gotta wonder how you americans can get warranty and us canadians get screwed over hardcore. Anyways... as I figured but worse, lol there's 2 rockers sitting on top of your head :P Glad to hear it's covered.. grats!
And ya.. get a ZZP head and your problems will be solved, most likely for an extremely long time, if not forever lol.

So what exactly is broken here? I see the rockers laying there but they look intact, just not in the right location obviously. The lash adjusters "look" normal but are they broken? Is it below the surface that they are broken?
Great photo by the way.

But that was the problem there, the rockers will cause your car to sound this way if that happens
Nothings broke.Basically he was floating valves. When that happens the cam lobe is off the rocker while the valve is still partially open, thus meaning there's no pressure on the rocker to keep it in place so they just fall over.Nothing holds them in.The valve and the cam are supposed to keep pressure on them so they don't pop out.

Okay cool. I understand how they work I just didn't know if something actually broke that caused them to fall. Floating valves makes sense.
So basically all you need to do is put them back on and stop with the over revs until you can get stronger springs.
Excellent thread.

He will have to shift earlier until the springs go in.

Well it's not like they "pop" off all of a sudden... they might but I bet if you look at the rockers, they have odd wear on them, from doing it to the point of them finally hitting the ejector seat button. I know I wouldn't just put them back on in my own opinion, I would definitely at least get new rockers.
I dont know about EJ's(blackbeast) but Tundraboarder666's fell off from float.I inspected them and they looked to be in good condition.Put them back in and the never fell off again.Even when we pulled it back apart for new valves and springs, they were still in place. Now if they had play in the rollers,I def.would recommend replacing them.
That sucks... too bad the exhaust cam was messed up... the rockers are cheaper in comparison. I suppose cost doesn't matter much though since it will be covered under warranty.
Do you think that someone without the hook up could get a problem like this covered under warranty? Does our ECU save info that would show the car was over revved? If so, would it matter?
