Too much oil?
Too much oil?
I took my '09 SS/TC to the dealer yesterday for my first free oil change (about 2000 miles on the engine). When I got there I asked the service guy how many qts it would take and he said 7 qts which sounded about right because I just figured it was the same as my old '06 SS/SC which would usually take around 6.5 qts. So they filled it up with Mobil 1 Full Synth and changed the filter. When I got home I decided to check the manual and saw that the LNF oil capacity is supposed to be 5 qts. So I checked the dipstick and sure enough its over the top notch. Should I have the excess oil drained or should I not worry about it?
SC takes 6.3 to be exact, TC takes 5 quarts.
how much is in it? 7qts will be harmful, as will 6.5qts if he put that much in, drain some until it is on the correct level with the dipstick.

well, since i'm not looking at it, and i don't know how much 1/2 an inch registers, just drain it out to the correct level, and if you take out to much, just add a little bit until it's right. No need to take it to the dealer, just have them put 5 quarts in from now on.
If the dealer does not have the knowledge on how much oil goes into the car you bring or does not have the common sence to check to make sure its right then find a new dealer. 7 and 5 QTS is a big difference and if it truly does bother you i would bring it back that way they know they messed up so it wont happen again.
In 2003 I bought a new car and the first oil change was free...MISTAKE. They uh I guess forgot to first drain the oil or added oil twice (when I came back they said it was a tad over). I got about three blocks and looked in the rearview and it looked like I just blew an engine at Daytona, took it back they fixed it, except I was smelling burning oil got under the car and the oil filter was leaking, took it back the next day, and they said "ok fixed" I drove it for another day same thing. Took it back and physically had to watch them put a new filter on and they washed the area down.
Me I've changed the oil on the same car for the last 5 years and wipe it down after with a towel and never had a oil smell nor have I forgot to first drain the oil . Funny how that works, but yes I will skip the free oil change from now on.
I got the free oil changes when I bought my car. I had to go back and tell this UTI Tech tool that my car uses 5w 30 Mobil one synthetic. Nothing else. This idiot was trying to put normal 10w 30 in my car.
Sometimes I wonder how people land a job with a big name company like that.

I just posted this on the how to change your oil section. It even said here on this site that the car takes 7 qts. I ended up putting in 5.5. I would drain out the excess you put in. 7 is WAY to much. If you did it wrong and something goes wrong you are screwed out of you warranty no matter what they told you. They could just deny they said that. You can blow a seal with to much oil in the crankcase and the car will not make as much power as the engines crank will have to spin thru that extra oil. The crankcase pressure will be way to high I'm sure.
I don't see them denying the receipt that I have that says clearly that they put in 7 qts and has the service manager's name on it. Regardless I will be going back to the dealership tomorrow to have them either drain the extra oil or drain it all and start over with 5 qts and I will bring the manual so there is no dispute. If something happens to my engine on the way to the dealership they will have to fix it.
umm, I put just 6 quarts of oil in my car and the oil on the dipstick was right at the max line. The owner's manual even says 6 quarts, where are ya'll gettin 6.5 quarts from?
I just checked mine, says 5
