What he said. I don't know why more people don't check the manual when it comes to things like these. I hear 6.0, 6.3, 6.5, 7.0 - anything for the ss/sc. Owner's manual says 6.0. I put in 6.0 and guess what? Dipstick reading is right at the middle tick mark - halfway between the high and low. People that top it off just so it reads to the highest mark are pushing their luck and wasting their time and money.

Going to the LNF engine, it has the exact same oil capacity as every other Cobalt out there except the LSJ. 5 quarts on the dot. Anyone who chimes in and says "add .2 for the filter", knows nothing about where the filter is or how it's mounted. Our filters do not retain oil and do not figure in the total capacity.

There is so much mis-information on this site regarding oil changes based on assumptions and guesswork versus what's actually printed on the manual that came with the car.

If your dealer missed something as simple as looking up how many qts of oil it took, I would never take it back if I were you. If they do that on simple oil changes, what do you think is going to happen if you ever need repair work.

That is sad that they dont know the capacity of the car, and Maven gets on to me everytime I state that most dealer techs are idiots. That is why I do my own oil changes.

Its okay, most lube techs are idiots. I dont like it when anyone talks about an entire group of people based on the few they know, or on stereotypes, you can say Steve the Tech at Smith Chevy is a moron, but dont say "most" techs are.

No seriously, everybody makes mistakes now and again, but 1/2inch overfilled on oil is pretty big one, its not like its real hard either....all 08-09 Balts take the same amount of oil.

I always used to think this as well, and it took me a while to understand why someone would tell someone else to quit ******* talking, and then agree with them. Eventually I just had to ask.

Ok well I took the car back to the dealership yesterday morning and showed the service tech the receipt where it said 7 qts and the manual where it said 5 qts and he looked very surprised. I had to remind him that this was the turbo model and not the supercharged model at which point he went into the back to talk to the service manager. Turns out that the 7 qts on the receipt was what they usually charge for an oil change on the supercharged model. He talked to the tech that actually did the service and checked the dipstick to confirm the overfill. Even though it said 7 qts on the receipt the change was done with 6-6.5 qts as it would normally be done on the supercharged model. The tech admitted the mistake, drained the additional oil, and did a compression test on the engine to make sure everything was ok and it was. It's a good thing I checked the oil and the manual as soon as I got home otherwise I could have run into some engine problems down the road. Needless to say, if I ever get a free oil change again I will have to make sure they fill it up with the right amount before I leave the dealership.

i'm a lube tech as well and i'm not offended due to the number of incendents my colleagues have been known to cause. it's always funny to hear people complain about the crap service they received at another shop when its apparent to us they don't give a **** about their cars in the first place. they just drive from shop to shop looking for cheap oil.

Have any of them managed to strip out a drain plug because they used an impact gun to tighten it. Happened to my wifes Expedition man was I irritated when I did the first oil change on it. We bought it used and it was in perfact shape but whoever owned it before definately did not change the own oil.

no never that bad, last year for us wasn't bad. we had a minor claim on a trans flush, but it should never have been done. if you're **** ain't been changed in 100k you might as well pretend the **** aint there. i get a lot of competitor cars that have been stripped and the customers didn't know, broken filter housings and stupid **** like that. gotta love the looks people give you when you ask about where the car as been prior to you inspecting it.

How do you break a filter housing? They go on until the gasket touches plus 1-2 turns. Impact gun with a filter wrench socket?

Got you. I though you ment oil filter housing. That would be nuts if they broke one of those and let it leave broken. That would be a lawsuit for a new engine.
